I would have much preferred Centro to have run a fast 800 before the World Championship than a distance more than 3 times his race distance. Much higher correlation between 800 time and 1500 fitness. On top of that, Centro appeared underraced and lacking confidence as a result. If you don't test yourself against the toughest competition it's difficult to suddenly be racing them in a championship. Contrast with Cheruiyot who has raced the whole season and has a lot of success and confidence as a result. Schumacher thinks physical training is everything, but it doesn't do much for an athlete's mental preparation.
Not the greatest World Championships for the Bowerman group. Houlihan runs an AR but is "disappointed" by finishing out of the medals. All that strength training and Tsegay runs away from her on the final stretch as Houlihan's kick fails to materialize. Frerichs, World silver medalist and American record holder, gets dropped and finishes 6th, almost 9 seconds behind Coburn. She was only 1 second behind Coburn at nationals. Centro, despite his fast 5k, runs tentatively and sees Cheruiyot turn the final into a Diamond League-type time trial. Centro, who does poorly at those kind of races, holds form and finishes 8th.
