Amby Burfoot interviewed Jos Hermens about Bekele's training and run at Berlin.

Hermens mentions several reasons why Bekele ran unexpectedly well in Berlin. Hermens said Bekele had gained weight so they got him to lose it. Also, Bekele had suffered injuries so they worked on his mechanics with balance and stability work. All of this with Bekele coming to Netherlands to train instead of at altitude in Ethiopia.
This seems odd. Bekele is about 5' 5" and weighs about 55 kgs (121 lbs). Has Bekele ever appeared to be overweight? An extra five pounds should be noticeable on him. Also, if Bekele was so smooth as a runner to run 12:37, 26:17, and 2:03:03, just how far off could his biomechanics be?
Does anyone else find this odd?
Bekele's performance seems so inexplicable that it sounds the same way. There has to be some reason Bekele caught the world by surprise last weekend. But was Bekele really that overweight? Hermens even says Bekele was "substantially overweight." Were his biomechanics really that far off?
Just how overweight was Bekele?
