There are a bunch of legal “doping” things that athletes do all the time. Go to train at altitude to increase red blood cell count. Use compression socks... He was simply pushing the limits
I truly believe that he really thought that he was working within the limits of what was legal.
This grey zone thing came after the fact.
It gets to be a pretty fine line. We have decided that going to altitude and increasing red blood cell counts is OK. Injecting a drug isn't. What about L-carnitine which is a nature substance? Is it ok for me to eat red meat with it? What about a IV drip? Our diets and lifestyle have tremendous effects on the chemistry in our body. Maybe turtles blood actually does give a 5% performance improvement;)
