Yes you are, and yes, it was also somewhat hostile and mostly sarcastic of me to do that I had to make some assumptions, so yes, you are right there.

Isn't this a pretty sight? So typical of letsrun. An overtly racist thread up on the front page for two days. No problem brojos, nothing to see.
Im not black im gray
Hey letsrun its Tige,
Its nice to be on top above whitey. keep at it joe quit your complainin. I have a white maid and a white woman.
Plus asking people, "where all the white girls at??"
Wow Paul Harvey . . . page 5 wrote:

I agree. Racism is everywhere. Like the little Nazis who cut this girl's dreads off in a hate crime. And don't forget about what Jussie went through...
Black high school student, 12, who accused three of her male white classmates of pinning her down and cutting off her dreadlocks, admits that she made it up
Amari Allen claimed three white classmates held her down and cut her dreadlocks off in the playground
She said it happened at their private Christian school in Virginia last week
Now, she has recanted her claims and her family has apologized to the boys
The school has also issued a statement to say that her claims were untrue

"I'm not sure that the number of black runners on RW covers is a problem. Eleven covers in five years is about 18%, and African-Americans are about 13% of the total U.S. population. I'm not a current subscriber, but over the several years I subscribed I think there were more covers with African-Americans than with Hispanics, who make up a larger share of the population. "

He's also saying that blacks being over-represented by 50% on Runners World covers is racist against blacks, because they should be over-represented by more than just 50%.
Wow. These are truly among the dumbest posts in LetsRun history. The fact that the second one applies childish arithmetic but with childish errors of logic makes it all the more laughable.
Um...You are aware that the cover athlete of Runners World each month isn't a randomly sampled human being from America, right? I do hope that you get that.
It is a sampling of high-achieving runners. Maybe you haven't been to any high-level track meets or road races in the past 50 years, but African-Americans make up a lot more than 13% of the population of high-achieving runners.
"Over-represented?" Look at the percentage of black athletes in US national teams and tell me black people are "over-represented." You statistical imbecile.

Isn't it funny how only white people ask "why think about race?"
Why don't you ask your black friends? I assume that you have many, since you don't think about race.
.. a couple things I will absolutely agree with..
-Predominately inner city communities appear to have little to no resources that are funding youth programs, or have access to trails and parks that promote such an interest to trail running
-XC is a predominately white sport here in the STATES, not world wide..the fall sports and the HS studs dominate football and likely soccer, XC funds are likely the lowest funded in schools (even bigger all white schools), and a lot of cases to where those athletes just can't compete for the football and soccer starting line ups so they opt for XC (usually)
-Winter gets dominated by basketball, maybe a few outlier athletes are racing indoor track
-Come spring time, if you don't run track, it's either baseball in most cases, or if you're from a bigger school, lacrosse is in the mix too..so you can see how the athletes can easily get spread thin..
Ironically, I visited a smaller southeast city this weekend, and the glaring differences from the university section of town, to the true heart and soul of the city and it's roots were undeniably different, it paints quite the vivid picture of the reality for the youth and what their options are, and what's being inherited and witnessed daily. Nothing racist about that thought, no hate towards it, in fact it was sad. I want better for all, but how do we get there?
How do funds get initiated for inner city trail and park development, creating 1/4, 1/2, maybe mile long loops? I believe XC funded teams in inner city schools could be a tremendous outlet for those students, and they'd likely love it. Who doesn't love a good energy buzz after a run?
He has a good message, I do get worn thin of the hypocrisy that black athletes don't dominate major sports, and still we have to hear the "woe is me" type approach that can be felt here at times. I played a predominately black position in my former sport, let me tell you, white athletes aren't seen on the TV screen across major D1 and the NFL there either. Overall, while I disagree with some parts of this story line, I'd love to see this manifest into a true reality for cities across America. It's not too far fetched to believe some big time change could come from simply kids getting out and running.
This thread is ridiculous.
Black athletes in this country have elite opportunity. NBA, NFL dominance, in places and money
Track and Field? Jumps, sprints, up to 800.
And this guy is complaining because a magazine doesn't roust enough distance runners out ?
There are plenty in Africa. There are less here. We have few black swimmers too. I don't know why, cos there are plenty of pools in traditional black communities. Especially around Philly.
Its pretty clear that environment has a little to do with sport choices. We have AAs who are focused on sprints and pro sports.
I think most of us would agree:
Increasing African American participation in distance running would be a good thing.
But come on, the proportion of media attention dedicated to different ethnicities has nothing to do with the current imbalance. Runners World has zero influence on people picking up the sport (white, black, whatever).

What suburb do you live in, Mr Goody McCul De Sac?
Your comment can be translated to, 'I have BLACK friends!! Sure they act white, and they're cream-of-the-crop top 5% blacks, but they're my friends, and they're just like me! So therefore I'm an expert on the lower 60% of blacks, even though I would never, ever live in a majority black neighborhood, for obvious reasons.'
Ok that's nice and all but literally nobody gives a sh!t about trail runners other than trail runners.
Joe Gray landed in Colorado Springs, ran up Pikes Peak and went "where are the black folk?".
Sorry Joe,
You in white country now
As a coach at the AAU/Junior Olympic level, our ages 8-14 are predominantly black in Track And Field. I'd say close to 80% of our participants, so I don't believe there is an issue at the Youth level. The resources and opportunities are there, they just get pulled into team sports as they age and their talent (speed) is picked up by the other sports.

I've met him too. Seemed like a great guy to me. Maybe you're the problem.

My name is Brandon Newbould (it wouldn't let me post directly like that), I might regret posting under my real name, but I'm totally sober and this thread has to get deleted eventually because it is so ugly. I hope the reason that you guys post under pseudonyms is because you understand on some level that what you're saying is cowardly and reprehensible.
I've crossed paths with Joe over the years and always been impressed with him. I thanked him Sunday for coming out, because he raises the level of the sport for all of us. Where you see arrogance I've only ever seen confidence and athletic integrity. I think the guy is bad-a$$ and a class act, and if he wants to go beyond just training and racing to encourage some other kids we should applaud him. Who called him slow-footed? Ha ha, man try racing him, on any surface.
