This sport is bizarre. Butchart didn't qualify.
If it was an east african runner then?
Then what? Then I'd be livid if that runner went on to finish above a Brit in the final.
I'm British and I support the British athletes but Butchart didn't qualify. He literally didn't finish in a qualification position or run a fastest loser time.
Jakob got DQ so they said Butchart can move up which is the rules. Now Jakob is not DQ and they say Butchart can have a go anyway? What a farce!
...and he's back in again...
Just seen on twitter from Jonathan Gault
yep, reinstated.
'no material advantage'.

Too much pressure from the bettors. Snip, Snap, Snip, Snap
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmGgV-2JNnMGreat name for a band EuroBrat!
Here is an update on his appeal. Here is the full statement from the IAAF.
What a joke.
I just want to see the rules applied consistently.
Here is the full rule.
I just totally disagree with this. He did gain a material advantage. Based on his positioning, he should have have to run the entire turn behind the Bahrain athlete. Plus he did take one step inside on a turn so he ran less distanceHe ended up going inside the curb because tried to pass on the inside of a guy who was squarely in the middle of lane to inside part of lane 1. If Jakob was pushed it was simply because the guy in the middle of lane one had no other option (unless he just wanted to let Jakob bull his way through and gain a material advantage he didn't deserve as there was no space to pass).
I need to go back and make a longer video. I didn't show the part where he passed the guy with no space.
Now the IAAF is going to encourage inside passes with 200 left.
I’d see that band.....not material, not on purpose, but off the track nonetheless. Stuff happens and sometimes very unfortunate. Still a DQ.
The real question is who is betting he will win the 5k?
That's an absolutely joke.

I don't like DQs but that's a blatant DQ. You don't take 3-4 steps inside the rail simply because you are too lazy to run wide. You try to pass on the inside , that's a risk you take. He should be DQd.
NO way is it blatant. He got bumped and gained nothing, zero. He should NOT be DQd.

He didn't get bumped. He went on the inside of the other athlete where there was no room.
yep he went on the inside and the guys squeezed him
So what? If the guy forces him out, that's a bump.
Just as well the poms didn't have anyone to take advantage, they'd be all in

I think 'material advantage' means something different to the jury: it's not 'theoretical microscopic advantage', it's "unlikely to have affected the race outcome".
Yes, you could argue he gained a centimetre or so from 3 steps on the inside. Yes, he could have had to stay in position behind someone on the bend, then had to move out and scorch past in the last 100.
This is the sane decision. And I am fed up with these petty protests by some other team's management spotting a stumble and desperate to score one more finalist and justify their existence. If there was a serious complaint, it would come from the wronged athlete.

You don't want to see rules applied consistently. You have an axe to grind, and you've made it quite clear that you really dislike this kid, for whatever reason.
Based on your posts you would think he willfully ducked inside and run an entire straightaway on the infield. In actuality he was bumped in a crowded race. The DQ was a terrible decision. The reversal was correct (but, again, the DQ was absurd in the first place).
Do you think this was DQ-worthy????
https://youtu.be/gTPHH880Cyc?t=1931Bottom line: the kid deserves to be in the final.
Oh stop it. Material advantage? I doubt anyone in that race ran less than 5015 meters. It all evens out in the wash. Being knocked off balance is a disadvantage in itself, and he came back no closer to the front than he left.
Robby Andrews got DQ’d for the exact same thing. Running like an a55hole and squeezing your way inside rather than slowing and going outside is definitely an advantage. Classic system being corrupt. Dopers gotta cheat and gain that advantage any way they can.
This sets a precedent now that they can’t DQ anyone for forcing their way inside and taking a few steps inside the railing due to “incidental” contact.
Use common sense:
Was anyone hurt or anything changed after he got bumped and took three steps outside the rail (actually then running longer, since he had to get back)?

Seems like a sound policy.
Intentionally cut to the infield to save distance, consider a DQ.
Get jostled in a tightly packed race, stumble, and accidentally take a couple of steps inside that lead to zero advantage = no DQ.
Pretty simple stuff, my dudes.
