In an age of intensifying global warming it's not at all unbelievable. Maybe all avid runners should stop voting for politicians who block efforts to curb climate change.

sssssurprise, too hot to run a marathon in the middle east in broad daylight
MORANS
Here's the IAAF's tweet in reply to the original French TV tweet:
"The IAAF has not considered postponing or cancelling any road event at the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019. There are contingency plans for all possible scenarios in place, but none have been activated."
A big nothingburger, apparently.
Editor's note: Here is the tweet:
Run it on the track. After all, it's air conditioned.

Exactly.
The climate crisis is threatening our sport. I ran indoors today, which really sucked. Normally in late September, I'm enjoying beautiful fall weather. But today the high will be 92 degrees.
And yes, we don't want to confuse weather and climate. But a warming climate means more hot days. It means less good weather for running. It means running is less enjoyable.
The solutions to climate change are beneficial to running. Electric cars mean we don't have to breathe exhaust fumes. And better overall air quality means that more people can participate.
So like MaynardMaster said, stop voting for politicians who block efforts to curb climate change.
Strong take here and funny, but are you saying there’s actually very little chance of it being cancelled?

They don't have elections in China and I doubt you are registered to vote in India, you need to start there for your crusade against "Climate Change". US develops a lot of the technology that lowers emissions and as a country overall we have lowered our emissions. So voting in the US should be for those who will push those technology advancements (thankfully that happened in 2016) and not vote for economy destroying policies that the "Green New Deal" crew wants.
Wasn't it put in Doha because of bribes in the first place? I don't think anything can embarrass them at this point.
Pay attention. Tiny has consistently come out against green technologies in favor of "beautiful coal" that pollutes the air.
Our tiny president thinks that windmills cause cancer.
Now he is crusading against higher fuel efficiency and cleaner emissions. This hurts sales of electric cars.
I'm tired of breathing exhaust fumes during my runs.

They should let them run on treadmills in a cool gym.

The World Championship marathon is usually a B race at best. Really no reason to have it on the schedule in the first place.
Have you seen the quality of the field? It's WAY better than any WOrld Marathon Major save for London. It's LOADED. Read
Rojo, Devil Dog is correct. Historically the WC marathon has been a B race. It doesn't make much sense to waste an opportunity on a race like the marathon, where conditions can ruin an entire season.
For once I agree with you. There should be a contingency plan, or rather a plan to simply schedule the WC marathon in an entirely different location altogether.
Putting the WC in such oppressive conditions ruins the competitive nature of the sport and reduces it to a test of survival.
This sounds like the work of Mary Cleseau Wittenberg!!
I'm just now noticing that this air-conditioned track stadium, in one of the hottest places on earth, is an open-air stadium. As long as they're air conditioning the outdoors, why don't they just air condition the entire marathon course as well? The IAAF could make that the theme of the World Champhionships. Doha 2019: F the Planet!

This is actually how you fight global warming.
Air condition the whole planet.

Surprisingly I agree with you 100%...go out RIGHT now and find a nearby city, with tolerable conditions, and measure, setup, and certify the course and let the marathoners compete. If the marathon is cancelled at a World Championship that will be the final nail in the coffin for me to bury athletics from my life. This is beginning to get to much with all the other bull$*** in track and field, seriously!

Would be great if they just flew all the WC marathoners to Berlin and ran it there on Sunday (started them an hour before the actual marathon or something). Clearly not going to happen, but a man can dream. Honestly it’s not worth risking trashing your body long term to race a marathon in 90F conditions with dew point in the 80s. This makes Duel in the Sun look like a journey through the arctic.
The Battle of Berlin. Bring it.
Could they hold it on that nice air conditioned track? 106 laps is a lot, but may be better than running in the equivalent of 111F...
105 laps.
Because you pull everyone who is triple-lapped until 30K, and every 26 laps you have the runners reverse direction, and run two laps in lanes 4-8 until the field clears. The final 26 laps become actually 27 laps.
Athens was crazy hot at the start of the marathon, but temps did get more manageable as the sun went down. But 90 deg with dew points in the low 80s is a complete joke. It will end up being like Boston with the cold and rain. All the top pros will drop out to save themselves for a race they can actually finish and whoever runs the race in survival mode will win. But the worst part will be that there won't be any spectators on the course. Most everyone living in Doha is from either South Asia or the Middle East. They could care less about the marathon. And the native population is very conservative Muslim. So, other than coaches and teammates and a smattering of US and European ex pats, the race course will be empty as far as spectators go. It will basically be like a party a rich billionaire throws for his kid who has no friends.
