Second half has more elevation drop than the first and lower altitude so don't count him out yet
you're right - that was a 14:05, so i was more than premature in thinking the wheels were coming off.

Alright I think he's officially done now. 15:09 and the race flattens out a little from here
No running clock, no split, no audio, is he still on pace?
2:09:38
59:30-69:08
Guess he wasn’t on pace the 2nd half. That looks brutal. It also looks kind of flat.
Which would be more impressive: Kipchoge running sub-2 with rotating pacers, etc. or Kipchoge breaking 2 on this course?
Actually pretty impressive for the guy who won, as his only marathon result was a 2:22 this year.
The guy who was third ran 2:08 back in 2012 (but wound up going 2:43 here, haha).
Let's wish these guys good luck with the stairs the next few days.

Rupp ran 13:37 on a track as a prep. His 3 mile time was under 13:10
Not a downhill course.
2:09:38 ha ha. Runners have been faster for decades.

4.5% downhill is too steep.
I think your "average" 2:05 guy might have a shot in the Tunnel marathon, where it's more like a gentle 1.5% downhill.
Of course, it's also on a gravel trail, so probably not as good for very high speed running like that. Still, I'd love to see someone try! ?
Funny thing is, someone DID try a downhill just the other night.
And this place yawned - though I bet a Bro or two skipped a heartbeat seeing the halfway time.
That's okay, though, the 'race' the other night was so contrived and dumb, being all downhill and all. We'll just wait for Kipchoge to run back and forth on a tree-lined course in ideal weather, with rotating pacers protecting him, and a huge sign on a pace car creating a wind tunnel. That's okay.

People run much faster than their flat marathon PRs all the time on downhill courses so it could definitely happen if the runner is good enough
I’ve run 2:53 in Chicago and ran 2:51 on a Revel downhill course. You can go out extremely hot on downhill courses but your legs are so trashed at the end that you slow down which evens things out. So yeah, let’s say he’s a 2::09-2:07 guy he will PR his half and then suck the last 6 miles and finish in 2:03-2:05 . He’s not getting a 30-35 mins increase like some people claim you get off running downhill.
The gain is more drastic for slower runners, say a 4 hour person
2:22 guy ran 2:09.
Too bad one of the 1,000 Kenyan guys running 2:08 wasn't there.

He was still on 2-hour pace at 30k and ran faster than the 30k world record. The downhill was clearly a huge help, he just wasn't good enough. He was like a guy in 2:15 shape trying to run 2:10 and blowing up and running 2:20. Just subtract 10 minutes from those for the downhill.
So maybe that's an optimal downhill grade for 30k, but I think it's likely that 4.5% is too steep for an "optimal" downhill marathon.
Maybe if you trained that grade of downhill consistently...otherwise it's going to be so easy to run with slightly different form than usual and nuke your quads, resulting in a massive positive split.
I guess what I'm saying is... I could see a 2:05-2:07 guy without any special downhill training go sub-2 on a gentler course.
