Yet he had no issues in far worse conditions = Austin, TX. Also, back then he was super excited at getting a 6th year for x-c, so clearly motivation wasn't an issue.

Not certain, but I think that he looked fine through 3km or more; running well for 3000SC but fading in the heat here when he is out for almost 3 times as long is not inconsistent. Also, peak conditioning vs beginning meet plus, here once you start to fade there is not a lot of reason to keep pushing hard - he certainly looked cooked to me.
