I want to carry 3-4 gels with me. Stick those in the waistband?
Are half-tights too pretentious? It seems like I get the least amount of chafing from those.

Why would half tights be pretentious?
I'd just go with half-tights
Best shorts for a marathon?
Cuts.
Short cuts
Patagonia Strider Pro. Light, comfy, and with more than enough pockets to securely carry those gels and more.
I would recommend the Saucony Endorphin Split Short. It's lightweight and breathable, which equates to exceptional comfort on the run! With a waterproof zipper pocket for small essentials, and reflective detailing on all sides, it is ideal for training or racing at any time of day.
The best shorts are no shorts.
Run in the nude.
Just wear shorts over the tights - like Compressport Racing Overshorts or Salomon S/LAB Short (these don't have liners and are super light)
The adidas Men's Core Supernova Short Tight. You can get 4 gels in the pockets. Used them for Houston in January and loved them.
The above has a zipper pocket on rear of shorts which I now consider essential for storing items such as ID and a $20 bill just in case. Detroit International says passport is required but my guess if as long as the race bib can be seen and one does nothing suspicious security will not ask for someone's ID. I carried a passport card ID for that race in a zippered pocket. I am not sure if I would use the mesh pouch but it is interesting.
I have similar side pockets on my shorts for gels but found that carrying 2 gels per pocket is distracting due to bounce. One per pocket is okay. If I need more I pin them to the outside of my shorts and flip the packet over to the inside.
Bouncing of the gel packets should not be an issue with the above shorts. I have 2018 Boston Marathon Supernova short tights that I bought a few months after the race on clearance. They have zippered pocket on the right rear that I think 2 gels may fit in. There is no small, inside pocket for a key on these.
Only one pocket on the above?
I hope all of the above would include a small inside pocket for a car key.
What do those with push button start on their vehicle and a huge key fob do?
Salomon Agile shorts.
Back pocket can accomodate 1 Iphone 6 or 3 gels.
Tracksmith has great options for carrying gels on race day.
Twilight Split Shorts with 3 pockets at the back on the inside.
Gels stay secure with minimal bounce and are easily accessible.

If you prefer Half-Tights there's the Reggie Half-Tights with two large pockets at the back on the inside.
I've carried 4 Maurten gels in these for my last marathon with zero bounce.

Real runners wear half tights

I'm tempted to try the Reggies. It looks like the pocket is inside, is it easy enough to get the gels out while running?

Good question. I am interested in the answer, too. My current CW-X ones, while they work, don't have great pockets.
I have CW-X half tights and always wear shorts over them (i know, i know)... do any of you have a lead on a singlet or tech shirts that are longer to cover the package? i mean it feels pretty exposed in the CWX. maybe it’s just the fit and i should size up? The tracksmith half tights with pockets look promising

Approximately 50% of humans have a package. No shame in outlining it.
Yes, it's fairly easy. There are two large pockets and I can fit up to two Maurten gels in each.
I raced Boston in them and use them for most of my long runs where I have to carry gels.

From the photos on the TrackSmith website, it looks like those pockets are inside the back of the shorts and not on the outside. Am I seeing things OR Is that the way it is? I couldn't imagine digging around in there for a gel during a race.
