I live in the West near huge national forests. A friend of mine took me mushroom hunting this weekend. We found a huge number of mushrooms. I got about half of the haul and was thrilled about this, but when I went home, my enthusiasm for the activity dropped off sharply when I went online to some pretty credible scientific sites and discovered that my "guide" was wrong about two or three of the "edible" varieties. None of them were listed as deadly but several were listed as inedible/not recommended species. There were other species that can kill after ingesting only a single one!
I cooked up the chanterelles, which were very recognizable and don't have a look-alike species. I've eaten them before, and even seen them on fancy menus... I feel okay today but I had some really misgivings last night. I threw out the rest of the species that weren't the recognizable orange/yellow chanterelles. I was surprised that my friend represented himself as knowledgable about something that is potentially life threatening. This doesn't fit with what I know of him. I even wondered if it was some kind of prank. I'm also used to knowing people out here who kind of present themselves as real "mountain men" who don't really have the goods, in terms of outdoor knowledge when it comes to whitewater, orienteering, hunting and fishing. The West is full of wanna-bes, just like everywhere else. I made it clear to my friend that I was a mushroom novice and would be interested in learning something.
Would you ever eat any mushrooms, gathered from the wild?
