She looked great behind Grace in Minsk. Had progressed really well.
Wow. Won by a ton!
1 6 6 OSIKA Shannon 93-06-15 USA (USA) 4:01.80 PB 1
2 5 5 BARYSEVICH Dariya 90-04-06 BELARUS (BLR) 4:10.75 2
3 2 2 MEZULIANIKOVA Diana 92-04-10 CZECH REPUBLIC (CZE) 4:12.83 3
She has been banging out races almost every week since July, and winning a bunch of them. Stepping right up to the Johnson/Purrier/Hiltz discussion of Americans threatening 4:00. Next year is going to be explosive in this event for the U.S.

She has been really getting after that standard this summer and finally hit paydirt!
Wow , that is MF worthy !!
She ran 4:13 in college

Does anyone know how the race played out? Was there a pacer? The results make it look like she essentially time-trialed it, which would make it even more impressive.
Disappointed why? She’s a total snacc.

This is impressive, especially if there wasn't a pacer. Winning a fast race by a lot is harder than getting dragged along in a fast race.
Bethlehem Desalegn, an Ethiopian running for the UAR was a DNF, so she could have been pacing.

4:01.8 is about the same as a 3:36.56 for a male runner. National class. Good, but not that great, but she could drop 3-4 seconds next year and become world class.
What it is is knocking on the door of World Championship and Olympic teams and contention. Two to three more seconds down and she'll have those things.
Pretty sure there was a pacer but Osika probably ran at least the last ca. 600m alone, otherwise she wouldn't have won by 8 secs. In any case it is considerably more impressive than the "dragged along" times by Purrier and others.

And, as has been pointed out endlessly here, those two or three seconds are very hard to get. Only seven American women have gone under 4:00.
To put this in perspective. Osika is 26. Her biggest accomplishment is running 4:01.80.
When Morgan Uceny was 26, she won 3 DL races.

It is actually equivalent to 3:34.1, which I am sure you ran many times in your just-shy-of-world-class career.

I agree, especially about Purrier. I think it is not a coincidence that in Purrier's two fast races she basically ran with Simpson. In Rome, she was consistently a few steps (usually, .2 seconds) behind Simpson until the kicking started. Ditto for the 5th Avenue Mile.
Looking at the video, it certainly looks like a Purrier deliberately used Simpson as a pace maker. Who knows whether they coordinated? Since they both run for NB, it seems possible.

if an american male soloed a 3:36, we'd all be hearing about it all over LRC

And promptly fell down.
What does this mean for Kate Grace? Yet another younger runner knocking on the sub-4 door that Grace seems unable to open. While the 800 seems far from a guarantee for her, the number of women that can run 1:58 and below now seems to be fewer than the number of women who can run below Grace’s 4:02 PR. Will be very curious to see what she decides for 2020. If it’s the 800, is Jerry the best coach for her?
Grace should switch to the steeplechase. If one of the US top three is injured, she could get a spot for Tokyo with 9:20.

This poster doesn't have a clue. She's already world class, she just ran 4:01. If you don't understand that 4:01 is great you need to learn more about our sport.
