Is Shitara already slowing a bit? 1:03:30 in 80 degree heat? There's almost no way this ends well for him right?
Not really. He was right around 1:00:04 for 20k. His third 5k was a tad slower than the others, but still holding at roughly 15:00 per 5k
Sammy Wanjiru slowed in Beijing but still won.
50:40 at 15K looks like the lead group is down to 5 women, with one runner about 10m back

He's Japanese, there's only one way to go and that is to go balls to the walls!

about 79 degrees now in Tokyo (according to the internet)
a slight slowdown from Shitara now might save him from those 6min miles later. he must have known the forecast and made a calculated risk. maybe his plan was a quick 10-20k to get some separation?
Maybe Shitara has found the one marathon bank we've all been looking for. That bank where you bank time early in a race but don't get charged interest later. If it's closing in on 80 degrees, we're gonna see (the 1% of you getting any coverage) some drama.
There are a lot of things I like about this race, and one of the biggest is the fan support. Almost every inch of the course lined by spectators -- awesome to see.
Bib #17 coming back to the chasing 4
1:15:30 for 25 k. Looks like he lost 30 seconds in the last 5k relative to his earlier pace
15:28 for Shitata from 20-25k -- he ran that segment in 2:10 pace (but is still on 2:07 pace overall). He's slowing. Just over 17k to go...
Shitara slowed maybe :30 the last 5k.

The video froze so I might have missed it, but it looked like Shitara didn't take a drink at 25k?
I had to download tunnelbear vpn to pretend to be in Japan. Stream works fine now.
Best marathon coverage I've ever seen. Cameras work and are steady. Even better than Berlin.
And these Japanese commercials!
Chasing 5 about 1:50 back. Another group of 7 or 8 another couple of seconds back
Chase pack is now up to five men -- Osako, Hattori, Suzuki, Nakamura, and new addition Taku Fujimoto, who ran 2:07 in Chicago last fall.
They cut the deficit from 2:01 at halfway to 1:49 at 25k.
That guy just lobbed his water bottle into the receptacle. So Japanese to even try to do that, and kudos for his good shot.
Honami Maeda and Ayuko Suzuki have taken off in the women's race!
Maeda makes her break.
looks like the pack has broken up, two women are away - about 20m lead, the other three are strung out in a line
can't make out the names of the lead two
