Nike has about 5,000 local employees in Portland. Not a bad crowd for a 9:00PM start on a school night. Not every employee at the Swoosh is a track geek (Fun Fact: Nike makes stuff for other sports and sell more of them too!).
It rained before the race. This atmospheric phenomena is known to happen in the PNW with alarming frequency. The track was not doused beforehand with EPO, CERA, RoundUp, Evian, Diet Sprite, or Astroglide.
It's kind of difficult for Americans to get into races that will promote such fast times. The IAAF has essentially killed the 5,000 at Euro meets. Euro promoters tend to only invite Africans and Ingebrigtsens anyway. Championship races tend to be slow staring contests with a kick at the end. American summer meets are usually second rate affairs for distance athletes held in hot and humid places that are not conducive to fast times.
Congrats to BTC for a well run race/time trial that got three Americans the Oly standard!
