trust me...that's not an enforceable rule. walmsley will get his 50mi "world best" and the BTC boys will get their new PBs certified. all you have to do is say that you invited somebody else and they didn't show up

Pathetic. While other athletes are racing for time and glory and sharpening against the World's best, Jerry's boys are running a time trial at corporate hq to get qualifiers too late for this year's world's.
Ill probably go watch. Traffic won't be bad at 9pm. Sounds like a fun time
How many 5000 race opportunities do you think someone like Woody Kincaid gets though? Is there any place in Europe that really wants a 13:12 guy (assume you give him credit for a time he hasn't run in like 2 years)? And if you racing in NA, how many races are going to be remotely fast enough? The 13:15-13:25 guys are in a tough spot where you too fast for a lot of the races that will be won in 13:30, but you aren't going to be getting many invites to the big boy races. And if you do, the field is going to go out way too fast for you. There are opportunities (the couple of stanford races are good bets) but it is a lot harder than saying I want to run a 5000m in 2 weeks.

They're trying to get olympics standards for next year and get in a race before World's. It has nothing to do with the WC standard this year.
The only one's who have a good shot at medalling this year are Frerichs, Centro, and Houlihan w/ maybe a few others having outside shots. If they all medal and Jerry's plan comes to life then he's going to keep maintaining this philosophy so expect not much racing in 2020 or 2021.
Pre - low key tune up race - USA's - maybe 1 low key tune-up - global champs. You can almost bank on it.

I said a few other have outside shots. No matter how Ethiopia picks their teams, they will have 3 studs (4 if Edris shows up fit) in the 5k and 3 in the 10k in addition to Cheptegai in the 10k and J Ingebristen and Kimeli in the 5k. It would be hard for Ahmed. Lomong would need to be in 27:05 shape at least, it's a stretch.

Are there only BTC athletes in the field? If so, can it be sanctioned? I know there was some discussion about whether Walmsley’s performance was record-eligible or only an exhibition because the race wasn’t open to non-Hoka athletes. Does that also apply here, or is there a difference between track and road/trail requirements regarding whether the competition is restricted or not?
Come on, think about this.
Invite-only races happen all the time on the track. Meet promoters can invite who they want for whatever reason they want.

Who ? Evan Jager and Shalane Flanagan
Flanagan was coached by John Cook when she won her 10,000 medal in Beijing.
Emily Infeld won the world 10k bronze in Beijing in 2015

There's a pretty significant amount of World Championships and Olympic medals attributed to Jerry's coaching. Especially considering he's only been in the professional game about a decade.
Olympic medals? Who?
Time to start paying attention to our sport if you don't know Jerry coaches medalists

That's not a race, it's a glorified time trial.
It's free admission and will be livestreamed. Hard to knock that these guys will be getting after it.
A 13:13.5 5,000m is no joke either. These guys will be going for it from the gun and the track is beautiful and it'll be a good vibe.
Also, no travel required, familiar track and training facilities, local supportive running crowd.

I get that it's kind of cool but I still don't understand why they are trying this now? Perhaps they don't care about WC as much as the olympics?
Presumably they're race-fit now, so might as well try, rather than waiting until race-fit next year, yet never racing.
It's an endless loop of bizarre with BTC.

...what is your personal best for 5K? You're talking like you've run 12.35...
They are racing now because BTC just returned from, essentially, 3 consecutive months of altitude training. Living & doing long runs at 7000' and above (Park City), interval/repeat training at 4500' (BYU track). The full effects of that kind of stimulus on the body will still be present.
BTC has never spent that long at altitude, let alone racing so soon afterwards. Though only a sample size of 3, we'll see if the "live high - train low" model has had an effect on these guys.
Physiologists, take note. Tonight's race has the feel of a science experiment.
One hour until kickoff. Would appreciate some play by play from a few of you with subscriptions.
The live results on runnerspace make it seem like the race hasn't started
I thought it was supposed to go off at 11:30pm ET
Standing at the track, 10 mins till start, lamong, centro and woody were warming up
Thank-you, on the east coast staying up late for this!
