You would think if training for Chicago was going reasonably well he would be running a tune-up race or two.

I toss and turn all night over this. Glad I am not alone.

Not at all. Winning.
For Rupp, the only winning move is not to race.
Seriously though, he can’t win Chicago, I have him pegged at 5.

Not really. Shalane hadn't raced all year before winning NYC. She was out with a spinal fracture, and I don't think she did a tune up race.
Sometimes it is better that way. The legs are fresh. He has nothing to lose.
Y'all forgot about this?

On paper my friend, but they have to run the race and one never really knows for sure;)
Cherono, mo, Chumba and molla all have solid records at majors and are all quick.
Not nervous at all.
He's easily the greatest American of his generation, and one of the all-time great Americans. He's taking his recovery seriously, and when he races, he'll be fresh, healthy, and prepared . So many others rush their recovery and develop recurring and new injuries. Rupp/AlSal are way too smart for that.
He could retire tomorrow and I'd be cool with it. The guy has had quite a run even with the resources he has. There hasn't been a lot of pure long-distance USA athletes that have had a tenure like the one he's had this decade. I also don't care because apparently everyone's doping.
Life of a track fan.

+1, Rupp is going to come back stronger than ever. He has been grinding like a crazy mofo. Hall's 2:04:58 is in jeopardy on a legit course.
He going to come back and do fabulous things then he will eventually retire and be the next super coach.
Im sure hes run some good workouts to know what kind of shape hes in
This is the first thing I thought about when I woke up this morning.
I jumped out of bed and said "Ryan, why has Rupp not run a tune up race this year?"
Back in the day, when runners were cashing in on 10k's living like hobo's on a train, running most of them slower than they were capable of but making money; I read an interview with Al Sal and he criticized them for racing too much.
He said something to the effect that he could do more in a workout than they could do in one of those races/workouts.
So, Rupp rarely races.
I don't think that's good for the sport. We need more Bill Rogers out there meeting people.
Bill R was a household name.
Chicago is the tuneup race for the 2020 Olympic year when it matters
London, Berlin, and the Olympics are the only varsity thons that matter

You forgot about Fukuoka.
I agree. Racing less is probably better for the athlete, but not so great for the sport. I find it hard to get excited about Rupp, despite his immense talent, as he doesn't seem to race much in any year. Compare how much Rupp raced, versus Farah, when they trained together.
