Or do as the do in XC skiing. Lanes. I'm pretty sure there's such a thing on the track. Last 80 or whatever, lanes. Behind guy can move out or in, guy ahead can't move out, or in, from where they were.

Yes, I agree. DQ
As it's the last DL meet of the season, he should have to drain the water jump with a teaspoon.
I don’t know why you would compare that to Quigley’s DQ. She didn’t impede anyone and didn’t gain any real advantage or run short of 3000m for the race.
Wale impeded him from passing him and did gain an unfair advantage.
DQ

Ethiopians love to dish out cheap moves like this. Don't think I ever saw a race where Gebby wasn't clipping someone's heels the whole way.
Def. DQ. Cheap dirty way to win.
I wonder why they don't do this stuff with Mekhissi-Benabbad.

DQ.
So obvious from the front angle that El B purposely goes wide all the way to lane 3 to have a clear run at the line, then Wale still veers all the way over there to impede him.
You rarely see obstruction that blatant. I said DQ immediately when I saw it. El B was going to win, Wale sensed him passing, and blocked.
Too bad it wasn't Benabbad he blocked, then there might have been a fight and everybody DQd.

I think in distance running the first guy off the curve should always have to go into line 2 deliberatelly - so as to by rule allow the next guy behind him to have an open line to kick mano a mano. This would also benefit the audience, because since the others would know this too that means drifting would be expected and delt with as no surprise. We'd have more three (or more) men/women side by side duels down the home stretch - which is good for Track PR.
Drifting like yesterday is currently a problem - but waaaay many more athletes coming off the curve in a blocked position behind the leader (especially in the 800 meters, come to think about it) has lost podium places by simply never getting a free lane over the last 100 meters at all.

I'm sure from the technical reading of the rules it should be a DQ.
However I don't want that to be a DQ so the rules need to be changed. Just say if you are in front of someone you can drift into any lane you want.
I just watched it, and I can't believe you're even *arguing* about it. Of *course* it's a freaking DQ. Are you kidding me?
If *that's* not a DQ, why don't you just allow chop-blocks in the middle of a race?
Why not let the runners do a Judo-throw in the home-stretch, and just chuck the other guy off the freaking track?
Jesus.
Both wale and el b should be disqualified for cutting in front of the 3rd dude.

Watching it live, I was like, "Definite DQ." Watching the replay, particularly the side view I"m like, "No DQ" but by the letter of the law it's a DQ.
If they are going to DQ Quigley for stepping on the line, that has to be a DQ. I wish it wasn't a DQ and am happy the way El Baakali reacted but you can't just jump out a lane too not get passed. If it was Worlds, I think he'd definitely be DQd. I'm not sure if they'll do it here.
Don’t care, but would love to see a healthy Jager in that race down to the homestretch to see how he finishes.
Definitely looked like disqualification to me. It was ridiculous that the NBC version barely discussed that, including no head-on replay, which was disgraceful.
This tactic is becoming more and more prominent. The runners sense they can get away with it so no kidding the limits will continue to be pushed.
Today would have been a perfect high profile statement, on the eve of the world championships. A disqualification like that would linger as topic into next year and dissuade similar attempts. Instead we've got a disqualification in the 100 hurdles that looked perfectly clean but fell outside the technical letter, while this blatant maneuver was fully ignored and the guy is doing a victory lap as if nothing happened

That should've been an instant DQ. Wale did a helluva lot more than just "jump out a lane too(sic) not get passed." He moved out two entire lanes and his last few strides were in lane 3.
everything he said ^^^
That was such an obvious DQ. At the very least it goes against the spirit of competition.
If something is not done, it will continue to get worse.
I can't understand why you would not protest, it's 50k
not him, the guy above him
I think it's good tactics. Bakali could have taken the lead in the last 400 if he wanted. Instead he sat on the Ethiopian and was unable to get past due to a positional disadvantage of his own creation. It's tough but fair to me.
What do I think? I think runners in general are getting way too soft if they think that's a DQ. Not to mention y'all need to watch it again in slow motion if you think Wale would be the one to be DQ'd.
El Baakali drifted into the inside of lane 3 after the last hurdle so he would be clear of the eventual third place finisher. At that point there was a lot of room between him and Wale. Wale meanwhile was at his absolute limit and when he looked over at El Baakali it pulled his body that way, which is a normal thing to happen as we tend to move in the direction we look. That pulled Wale right up alongside El Baakali who was still on the inside of lane 3 but then Wale pulls ahead slightly and El Baakali tries to move into the outside of lane 2 where Wale is, not vice-versa. It was stupid move on El Baakali's part because they both had an unimpeded straight line to the finish and it would have done him no good to move into the outside of lane 2 at that point even if Wale wasn't already occupying that space.
DQ worthy. Seemed like Wale Impeded twice; drifting out in the sprint and with the lean.
El B should have moved to lane 9. Although maybe then Wale would have followed him all the way there and impeded him. I think if Wale goes to impede him on lanes 5-9, then it should be DQ. On lanes 1-4 however no DQ.
DQ.
In cycling, you have to hold your line when in a finishing sprint. Same thung should be true in track. It's poor sportsmanship to push your competitor out TWO LANES and the reach your arm across to HOLD HIM BACK in orderto win.
