for 2 years) captain of the track team, conference champ in 2 individual events and a relay and was a 5 time All-American, when it was only 1st team (top 8, none of this 2nd team BS). College was easy. I only partied for a few hours a week, usually Saturday night.

This is an excellent question. A better question would be HOW MUCH did you party in college? Followed up by what was the IMPACT on your academic and running performances?

There a lot of high schoolers looking at college as party time. The old experienced here have an opportunity to help them out.

I didn't drink at all until a couple weeks before my 21st birthday. I went to a few parties before that but didn't drink, mostly because I was pretty focused on school and running. I went out more the tail end of my senior year, but looking back I would have definitely partied a lot more in undergrad. I got pretty high grades, but I wasn't successful enough as a runner to justify avoiding the party scene. I definitely tried my best though.

Yes, allot. Many nights sloppy drunk and walking zigzag. This was 15 years ago though.

Franzia olympics, initiations , etc... lots of fun and wouldn’t take it back.

Still did my work and left the partying to once a week.

I was pretty serious in high school so didnt party much, kept that same attitude through freshmen year but gradually started to party more starting with my sophomore year. Once I wasn't running as well as I wanted to it became harder to justify living a disciplined lifestyle. By my junior year my drinking was getting to the point it was definitely impacting my running, not that was racing so poorly that anyone noticed just that I knew I could be running significantly better without the constant hangovers. I was running well enough where i was able to race at most of the big meets and qualify for national meets but not good enough to consider racing post collegiately so i made the most of my senior and 5th year to go party and have a good time.

Would i change things now that enough years have gone by? probably not, but i would change how i partied. there was no reason to have as many drinks as i would on a night out, 3-4 beers would have sufficed. I also would've called it a night earlier on many occasions--no reason to stay out until 2am and eat mcdonalds when you have 7am practices.

Sorry Mom, but yes and yes. I never partied in high school (mostly because I was never invited), so I spent at least the first two years of college making up for lost time. I loved every second of it. Now I'm middle-aged and stodgy, but I still think of those as the best two years of my life.

I did not party, but I always fought for the right of others to party.

I went to a NESCAC school (small, academically strong). In freshman and sophomore year, the many type-A overachievers transferred their competitiveness into partying. It helped people find friends on campus, but wasn't reconcilable with general productivity.

After that, most people relaxed. Maybe a couple nights of hard partying per semester -- that was enough. Otherwise just chill over a couple beers.

That's the best strategy; it doesn't interfere with your main goals, while maintaining its novelty, since it's rare.

Oh did we ever party? Like no one else. It was all the time. The girls, the booze you name it.

It cost me all though. You may think it's cool to even come on here and talk about it but it cost me my dream. To go from having the standard and having it all only to end up with nothing other than living through watching others..

Yes but not crazy frequently. A lot of regular students or athletes in off season will party multiple nights a week. This would obviously be detrimental to good running. With that said, once-a-week partying (and usually even less frequent) I think can be fine for a d1 runner. Train hard and train well all week (get good sleep too), finishing with long run/workout/race Saturday. Then a Saturday night party (don't go insane with drinking), sleep in Sunday and do light run, by Monday you'll be fine. I don't think that will affect your training much. We would usually go out a couple Saturdays a month. But I wouldn't recommend completely abstaining from parties as they are a fun part of the college experience with your friends and teammates.

You tell yourself that running is the reason girls don't like you?

My next drink will be my first. I went to a fair number of parties and frequently to my "local" (a bar three doors down from my house), but there was always some nonalcoholic drink available. Had a lot of fun at parties and never advertised that I wasn't drinking alcohol, so never got a hard time from anyone.

That two-hour run was always waiting for me on Sunday morning so I was never really tempted to go crazy on Saturday night.
