Thompson ran 3:35.01, which is just .01 off the Olympic standard. It's bad enough USATF isn't sending him to Worlds this year (though, as pointed out above, everyone knew the rules going in). But it also made me think of the following scenario:
Let's say Thompson doesn't run any faster between now and the 2020 Olympic Trials. Thompson finishes 3rd at the Trials in the 1500 (just like he did this year). He's in line to get an IAAF invite to the Olympics based off his world ranking, but USATF decides it will go with the top 3 finishers with the standard, so they take the guy who finishes 5th at the Trials (who has the standard) instead of Thompson.
Obviously this is a very specific scenario I'm projecting here, but I'm already worried that USATF is going to ignore the world rankings in its selection policy next year. If USATF won't send Thompson to the Olympics because he didn't run .01 faster in some meet nine months before the Trials, they should be ashamed. Hope it doesn't come to that!
