You're right it is a moot point. He is at Stanford now, a school where he will have his pick up the elite runners in the US. At Iona he and Mick before him could not attract a top 5 US kid year in and year out. So they had to rely on not just Kenyans, but international students all together. It's a strategy many schools use if they can't get US kids, not that US kids are inherently better, but you don't have to deal with culture shock and other headaches of international students.
