Hi guys, with signing up for my first marathon I wanted to know what kind of goals I should have and what paces I should expect or try to pursue in chasing my first marathon.
A little background about me is that I'm a 23 year old runner that started about 3-4 years ago as a college freshman, never did track or anything and went from being incredibly underweight at 115lbs for 5 foot 9 and smoking two packs a day to being 133 and usually averaging 50 or so miles a week for these last two years. This summer averaging 70-100 miles, simply because I had nothing else to do with school being on break.
I've only registered and ran 3 5km Races and 1 Half Marathon Race but frequently ran those distances and further for fun. My PR being 19:57 for the 5km, and recently I went out and tried to gauge where I'm at currently after only building a base in the summer and ran it for 20:17.
A week's schedule looks usually like two runs a day, an hour or so (7-9) miles in the morning and an afternoon/evening run of whatever happens, one tempo run on Tuesday, and then a long run on Sunday (so far I've reached 16 miles as my furthest, a few minutes past 2 Hours). I typically do my easy runs anywhere from 8:40s to 7:45s. Probably too fast for me I know.
I'm wondering based on these times and kind of training structure, where do I go from here for trying out my first marathon? I obviously have the higher goal of then just-to-finish but don't know where to gauge it from there? Try and run it at a 7:30 pace? 8:00? I want a higher mileage plan as my body doesn't really break down, but I'm not sure where to go or start since my running has had very little structure compared to most of the LetsRunCommunity.
I've never had a plan, coach, or friends in a similar situation that I could ask for guidance. So I'm asking you all before I'd need to purchase a $100+ plan from a running shop.
Suggestions, A plan, what book to read, etc., I'm open to what you guys have to say.
