Here it is everyone, another year, another exciting GMAC season. Let's hear your predictions!!
The D2 Midwest region is stacked as always. But many large questions loom... will Malone peak too soon? will Walsh struggle with injuries? is this Findlay's breakout year? will this be the final nail in the GLIAC coffin? Last year's schedules provided lots of cross comparisons early on, All Ohios and Pittsburg, but this year is different so we're going to need some serious speculation to figure who will take the GMAC crown!

Let's start with the defending champions and regional chokers... MALONE. The obvious points, they lose McCartney but retain a strong top three, Fresenko and the Chaplin brothers who had a strong showing at the 2019 track championship. Coach Hazen has mixed success with atheletes with the biggest complaint being that they perennially peak too early. I won't dwell on their worse than poor performance at Regionals last year, that's for a different thread. There are rumors that most of the top 7 have been training at altitude. This has obvious benefits but also raises concerns. Mammoth Lake is a long way from Louisville Kentucky. My personal take, I've been a Midwest running fan for a long time and these hard-working Evangelical Ohio boys really come off as a great group of guys. I'm rooting for them.
WALSH, their cross-town Papist rivals. Will Walsh get washed from the podium again?? Walsh graduated their top runner as well, Kernell, but retain Murray and Caniford. They have solid depth, returning 17 runners. Their recruiting class was the strongest amongst GMAC schools, looks like Lutt and Roberts (both around 9:30 for 3200m) will make the biggest impact. I've heard there's still drama from Steven Kapes lingering, lets hope they can squash that early on.
Since we're on the topic of recruitment.. let's talk about CEDARVILLE. They have the least impressive recruiting class out of all of the contenders. Not horrible, just nothing special. They'll have to count on their returners to carry the team, which will be tough without Sullivan and Gatchel, though from the downward spiral of Sully's career it seems that he would be little help. My personal take, predicting Cedarville in 3rd is the farthest reach, they could very easily be toppled by Hdale or Findlay. They won't be opening up at All-Ohios so it'll be difficult to see how they stack up.
Interestingly enough, Walsh and Malone open up at the Akron Invite on Sept 7 (which is notoriously short. One anonymous coach claims that he rolled the course and it was almost half a mile short!!), so expect some superhuman times. This was a big discussion last year. Just keep in mind, those times might mean nothing in light of October.
Some other things to keep in mind.
1. The speedy Frenchman from West Virginia, Emeric Arnaud, is no longer a factor with D&E leaving the conference. It'll be interesting to see how he does this year. No doubt he would've run away with the GMAC if they were still in it... but alas.
2. Don't count out Humes from Hillsdale for the individual title... in fact, count him in! He had a horrible performance last year, 15th place, but that was due to the muddy conditions, as he proved later by crushing his GMAC competition at Pittsburg and becoming an All American. In addition, their junior, Mark Miller, has been making serious improvements over the summer according to his instagram. In general, Hillsdale is weak with true distance runners but tends to have some crazy quick middle distance dudes, with Humes and Miller leading the "charge."
3. In my opinion, the teams below 5th place don't deserve a consideration unless they prove themselves somehow early on. Some of these schools, OVU, ODU, and Lake Erie barely are able to field 7 runners.
Let's have some good-natured fun in this thread, but also make some serious, well-founded predictions. Discus.
