You really should stay in nicer hotels if that's something poor people like you really see. And for the record, Red Roof Inn isn't a hotel.
I have no problem with a Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn Express and I've stayed at hundreds of this places. These limited service accommodations provide a room, bed and bathroom and not much else. They are really just a step above a campground and guests dress accordingly.
A real hotel will have a restaurant with a hostess, an executive lounge and a dress code. Unless it's at a resort (or in the US) that typically includes no shorts or flip flops. It is generally assumed that guests won't show up in swimwear or sleepwear.
