The first woman over the line looks to be a battle in two. Vivian or Gladys.
Whoops, wrong city this fall. This should be Worknesh Degefa v Mary Keitany
Worknesh Degefa FTW. The winner of the Boston marathon in 2.23.31 won then by 42 sec then 1.07 back to third. Degefa on that day smashed the first half in 70.40, already 2.27 ahead of a pack of ten. The pack was too slow to chase, the women who finished 2nd to 4th negative split the course. Prior to that, in January, Worknesh tried to stay with Ruth Chepngetich in Dubai. They were halfway in 68.10 with a third competitor, dropped her before 30km with a 16.26 split between 25 and 30k. Ruth and Degefa ran together the next 5k in 16.34, then by 40k Ruth led by 13 sec after a 16.09 split and won by 33 sec, both opening up a gulf of 3.24 back to third. Workload could be the dirty word, though. Her first two years of marathon running consisted of just the one each year. This year this will be her third, if she doesn't run at World's for Ethiopia. Worknesh is 29yo and ranked 9.
