Sawant is one of the worst council members I've ever seen anywhere outside the People's Republic of Eugene, where we had Kevin Hornbuckle grace us with his presence.

She is a close second. Her "radical" goals have no foundation in reality - social and economic, and her goal is just general upheaval of anything and everything, regardless of what is working or not. Scorched Earth philosophy of "if you don't agree with me, you're the problem" inherent in so many politicians today - but she is especially toxic. She's complicit in the destruction of Seattle as a safe and clean place to visit in many locations - including Williams Place Park.

Now, to be fair, the slide was occurring before she got there, but she used two hands to push it right off the cliff with her rhetoric.

It depends on what you want to produce.

A lot, if not all, of Seattle downtown parks are very undesirable. I wouldn't go in them for anything. The further you get out of the downtown area the better but there are still many that are pretty bad. All kinds of homelessness, drug paraphernalia, used condoms, litter, trash, are all over the place.

It's funny that the person quoted Marysville. It's a small town roughly 30 miles north of Seattle. Used to be a nice place. Now it's full of drug addicts, thieves, crooks, and the like. Couldn't pay me to live in that dump. Yes, there are a few nice places in Marysville but they are the rare exception and not the rule.

is it really any more complicated than increased economic pressure, insufficient mental health resources and drugs? I don't think you are going to solve the issue of the fact that people susceptible to these problems exist. We need to figure out to minimize the number that do, for their benefit and for yours. If we figure out a solution for their problems, yours disappear as well because they won't be that park. That seems to be the most efficient path, rather than pushing your problem over onto your neighbor's yard/park.

Stop treating it like a 'these people are in my way' problem and you might get somewhere.

It's much a bigger issue than you losing a place to walk your poodle.

How many of these are vets with mental health issues after coming back from needless wars?

It's interesting how many times the 'bootstrap' people are the same people complaining about the people who fell from the sky when their bootstraps broke and landed in their front lawn.

If you are against safety nets, you can't be against people landing on your front door when they fall. that's how it works.

Nobody is ever at fault for their choices in your world.

Then there's the Euro-Nordic "solution" which is to have umpteen bazillion bureaucratic "safety nets", none of which actually function, and there's nearly just as much homelessness as in other places.

Denmark: 5.8 million people, 6700 homeless. (0.12%)

USA: 330 million people, 553000 homeless (0.17%)

Italy: 60.6 million people, 52000 homeless (0.09%)

Norway does done pretty well in declining their numbers though (5.5 million, circa 4000 compared to 6200 in 2012). Maybe this is why?

It's just sad because many West Coast cities that are fighting for economic equality are becoming cesspools for homelessness, drugs, and degeneration. Idealistically they have something, but they're exacerbating the problem with their "fair" solutions. Who wins now? No one.

Sweden has 34000 homeless from only 10.5 million people.

If USA had that rate, they'd 2x their number overnight.

The good news - In the future, it will be too hot most of the year for homeless in LA, and they'll all be in Omaha.

I propose two options:

1. Manual labor for food and shelter.

2. Load malcontents onto barges destined for outgoing ocean currents. Bulldoze them into the Sound.

The main thing is that there's no reason in some countries to count the homeless correctly. The State is already responsible, so they obviously undercount (you actually need to be issued a government ID that says "homeless" to count in some places, or to be "owed a duty" of accommodation to speak bureaucrat-ese).

While in USA there are huge cohorts of advocacy groups funded by NGOs who want to exaggerate the numbers.

But those who in live in USA usually don't know much about outside USA.

Germany, even discounting Merkel's refugees (which double the numbers), has about 400000 homeless, and only 1/3 the USA population.

France has about 150000 homeless (by "official numbers"). Netherlands has terrible housing equality and 30000 homeless from 15 million population. These are not beacons to be followed, even if they were true.
