Exactly. Not saying it's not possible, but the muscular and psychological demands are apples to oranges. I've cited this example before, but a successful world major marathon runner isn't really challenged by terrain, it's essentially a track meet. Lake Sonoma 50, has 10,500 ft of climbing around switchbacks and almost equal descent. It's just all around different.
With that said, I'd be intrigued to see a sub 2:10 runner take on a race like Leadville. Very runnable, and East Africans train primarily in high altitude. Still though, it's 100 miles haha.
I am all for barriers being broken and taken to new heights within the sport of running. However, the blanket statements every time an ultra thread comes out is high school petty and not even giving respect where respect is due.
