Kalle is near his ceiling. I am not a fan of his biomechanics. Very chopped Stride. Not very fluid. He works very hard so low on efficiency. Maybe 3:33.3 before he retires.

Which list is that? Not in the fancy bears documents posted at letsrun that have rupp, farah etc listed. But not kipchoge.
I loved his face in the last 100m.

Janne Bengtsson, 72, is his coach. Berglund started to do double threshold runs quite recently and he says it turned out well. I can translate an article about it
Kipchoge is the strongest runner on earth and he and his coach Patrick Sang are satisfied with single threshold runs. So it really looks double thresholds are not necessary.

Kalle has been knocking on the sub 3:35 door since a few years back but looked to be stuck at 3:36-3:38 .
Now at last sub 3:35 he really seem to be able to reach maybe 3:31-3:32 in a couple of years. Will he run sub 3:30?
I doubt it .Maybe if he changed to the coach with the magic wand.
You mean Ake Svenson, Dan Glans, Gunnar Ekman, Ulf Hogberg and Anders Garderud never ran faster than 3:36.49 in the seventies?
Sweden really has fallen off. See their greats here:

i`m with you here! He runs like the Hunchback of Notre Dame.Frame in shoulder section and arm guide No beautiful smooth running style exactly, but who cares as long as it goes fast.
Isn't there an old Norwegian folk son about this?

I’d be interested in this article, translated. Thank you!

I don't know of him on any Fancy Bears list or any other leak for that matter.
I did an attempt to translate it. Here is the link to the original article:
Double threshold runs have become the new fashion in Swedish elite running. Kalle Berglund and his coach Janne Bengtsson, Spårvägens FK, have followed the idea with great results and since last autumn Kalle go for a double threshold run two days a week. Here will Kalle and Janne tell their experiences.
Janne Bengtsson, coach in Spårvägens FK, is perhaps one of the most merited coaches in Sweden with more than 40 National championships medals taken together with his senior athletes. Currently he is most famous for being the coach of Kalle Berglund but during his 50 years of coaching, Janne has trained other succesful runners such as Patrik Johansson (3:38.95, 1500m), Gunilla Andrén (2:03.94, 800m) and other top runners. In 2017 Janne was rewarded with the European Athletics Coaching Award. He says "I became a coach early and have always been interested in the coaching parts so the transition from being an athlete in the 70s to a coach was smooth".
Janne currently lives on Lidingö with his wife Tina but his training philosophy is based on years of experience. The idea has always been mileage and endurance and a long time ago the future success of Kalle Berglund's double thresholds was made to reality.
"I have always believed in mileage since speed hurts more. With Patrik and Kent we did some similar threshold training with fartlek and chosen paces. I believe in this and especially after seeing how well Kalle responds to this training. He has much more endurance now." says Janne.
Something that has gained popularity during the last years are double thresholds. Most of the inspiration comes from the Norwegians and Mikael Ekvall, Strömstads LK.
"The Norwegians has done this type of training for a long time, often in skiing. We have taken inspiration from the Ingebrigtsen brothers, Ekvall and Leif Inge Tjelta" says Janne.
Janne has been the coach of Berglund since he was 16, the last seven years in other words. They decided to try the new training philosophy since Kalle has suffered with many injuries during his career.
"I broke down too often. This was a way to get more controlled training to avoid injuries. Before we didnt use lactate measurement in the same way but now we use it in every workout", says Kalle Berglund who has been injury free since two years back since they started with double threshold runs.
The training is based on controlled quality workouts with lactate measurements. This means you can add more quality work every week and more mileage overall.
"We do very low amount of lactic acid training, in periods no amount at all. If you look at other endurance sports; cykling, swimming, skiing, all of them are based on endurance. You cant run as much as you bike, you would fall apart but this is a way to get more quality miles and workouts", explains Janne.
Today there are almost no good 1500m runners that would not be good at 3000m or 5000m. You need the endurance. The best middle distance runners runs around 150km a week, says Janne and adds that Kalle Berglund also got some endurance for longer distances. For example, he ran 29.47 at Kungsholmen Runt 10k in 2018.
Since Kalle goes for two double threshold runs every week the quality mileage has increased from 30k to 40k.
"I do more quality work and run fast more often but not as hard as earlier" says Kalle. The old training was often "all out" and you were supposed to be more or less dead after every workout.
The athlete's own will is very important in a training change. "If Kalle didnt want to change it would have been impossible. I cant force him. What's necessary with this type of training is discipline" says Janne.
"In general it's important with discipline. Se measure lactate after every workout and in the beginning we measured after every single interval. It's important to not go to high in lactate since that increases the risk of fatigue and in the end injuries, sickness or overtraining. You need discipline, mostly in the beginning of the workouts. It's better to start a little slower and increase the speed during the workout instead of going too hard in the beginning so you need to slow down and suffer" says Kalle.
"You must decide to do this to 100%. The lactate level must not increase too much, then you need to accept it, calm down and slow down. No ways around.", says Janne with a serious voice.
Two years ago Kalle started his new training philosophy with one day with double threshold runs a week. It's important that the first run of the day do not go over 2,5 mmol lactate and the second one cant go over 3,5 mmol lactate. Kalle explain that the point where most people start to build up lactate acid is around 4 mmol. His own build-up point is a little lower and the idea with a limit of 3,5 mmol is to have some safe space between the build-up point.
In the beginning it was quite difficult to find the right lactate level but I found out quickly how it felt. Nowadays Kalle and Janne only measure the lactate one or a few times every workout.
Lactate is more trustworthy compared to heart rate which is based on sleep, hydration and stress. With heart rate some workouts got way too hard. The difference could be over ten heartbeats depending if the workout was in the morning or afternoon.
Since the autumn 2018 Kalle has done two threshold runs in the same day, two days a week. The selected days are tuesdays and thursdays and saturdays are hill repetitions the most common workout. As mentioned earlier, the limits are 2,5 mmol and 3,5 mmol lactate in the first and second run. However, in the hill workouts the lactate can reach as high as 8 mmol. Those intervalls are changed to track workouts during the season. The rest is easy runs, sprints, strength training and a long run at maximum 20km. Some weeks are cross training or water running added. The total weekly mileage is between 130-150km.
"A common week is 4-5 laps around Råstasjön (Råsta Lake) (2km per lap), tuesday morning, and in the evening 10x1000m with 1 minute rest. Thursday morning is the same as tuesday morning and in the evening we could do 25x400m. On saturdays it could be 20x200m hill with 75s jog down.", says Janne.
"I like to compare workouts and often run the same routes. It's easy to see if I improve or if I am getting sick or overtrained", says Kalle.
Another important aspect when you choose the route for the threshold run is a flat course. With hilly routes the lactate could easily go too high. However, on easy runs there are no problems with hilly routes.
"In the beginning it was though to do two threshold runs in a day. I was tired on the second workout but nowadays the first run feels like a normal easy one. The days with double threshold runs are often over 30km in total mileage but it feels almost comfortable to do two thresholds now. Janne says I am less tired and have better endurance now" says Kalle.
Important is that the same amount of lactate could mean different speeds, it simply doesnt go as fast in the morning. They dont know why since you should be well rested but many other share the same experience.
At last, Kalle adda that it doesnt have to work för everyone. "We all are different. But it works well for me and it's going to be exciting to see the results in the future".

They could stone him to death with all of their Olympic medals.
Olympic medals from the 20s-50s don't matter nearly as much because hardly anyone was competing.
Good stuff Rojo, I like all of the results and recaps you posted tonight.
So basicly ingebrigtsen training
Thank you very much.

Sounds about right. Maybe less mileage but other than that it’s spot on.

Very very impressive race by him. Took down one of the top Moroccans with ease.
Berglund really seems like someone that is going to be a star in the event. Young guy improving every year.
4th best Scandanavian guy ever after the Inge bros?
EVER? You mean as in all time compared to Hägg, Andersson, Nurmi, etc?
Scandinavia = Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
Nordic Countries = Scandinavia + Iceland and Finland.
Simple as. Dunno what's so difficult about it.
Fins have close ties to Sweden after being ruled and plundered by them for centuries (giving Finland a significant part of the population of swedish heritage and to a smaller degree vice versa), but Scandinavian language and culture is very different from the finnish one.
So yeah, probably 4th FASTEST Scandinavian guy. Wouldn't say 4th best though.
