So Stephen Schwarzman is giving out a ton of money to USATF athletes via the USATF Foundation. Here are some of the details.
the USATF Foundation wrote:
In 2017, Stephen A. Schwarzman, Chairman, CEO and Co-Founder of Blackstone, became the largest individual donor to the USATF Foundation with an unprecedented $2.5 million donation in support of elite track & field athletes, and has since increased his total support to $2.75 million. The funding is meant to provide financial support to assist these athletes in achieving their goal of bringing home a medal from the IAAF World Athletics Championships this year in Doha, Qatar and the ultimate goal of competing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics next summer.
This year, he gave out $829,000. 25 athletes got $25,000 each (including 7 mid-d/distance runners) and 51 got $4,000 each (including 11 mid-d/distance runners). We imagine the awards are a huge boon to many particularly the field eventers who may not have big endorsement contracts. The application says that "preference will be given to athletes making less than $50,000 a year; however, all athletes are encouraged to apply regardless of their income level," but clearly most (if not all) of the US mid-d distance runners getting the $25,000 make that much.
