An assault rifle has a fully automatic mode, or a burst mode. A semi auto does not. There are millions of them in the US, and the most common rifle sold. All pistols also are semi auto.

What kind of lunatic hunts deer with a .50?
Oh, yeah, trophy hunters who camp out in deer blinds, get drunk, pour deer piss all over themselves, and can't hit the broad side of a barn.

And most of them are going bankrupt anyways.

I think revolvers and shotguns and bolt-action rifles are fine. Nobody needs semi-automatic rifles designed for Vietnam and Afghanistan in their home.
Plinking can be enjoyed with a bolt action .22lr (actually more fun).
Hunting is an edge case that very few people actually do. Even then bolt action is more accurate and more commonly used for hunting rather than AR type weapons. I've seen people hunt hogs effectively with a bow even.
If you shoot and miss an animal they disappear, how likely is it that firing again will hit? Just spraying bullets?
I really don't get why anyone needs an AR-15/AK-47 or whatever

I get that millions are sold but that doesn't really answer my question Bob.
Do you need one? Would a revolver, pump action shotgun and bolt action rifles suffice for all civilian activities?

Or I could be the typical person of the internet age who is capable of researching things that they find interesting.
As someone who chooses to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights, I was interested enough in the topic of ballistics to take an hour or two do sone basic research when deciding on what firearms to purchase for target shooting and home protection purposes.
If you see something factually incorrect in something I wrote, I’m honestly happy to be educated further. I enjoy learning about the details of topics I find interesting enough that I’d even be willing to learn from someone who obviously dislikes me without ever having met me.
So what did you get for home defense? If ya bought anything other than a shot gun then you need to rethink your strategy.
Having said that I love ARs. Better buy em while you still can. I couldn't find a .22 to fit my five year old daughter. Her arms were too short. Even the .22 chipmunk was too big. Well someone told me to try an AR with a collapsible stock. Worked perfectly. Bagged many squirrels since lol.

Who's Bob? As far as "need" goes, other than my handguns that I use for home defense (also target practice), I don't "need" any of them. I have them because I'm a law abiding gun owner, I like to target shoot with them, they are legal and I like to hunt. I also hunt with a bow, have two of those and a crossbow. I don't "need" those either, but there's a certain satisfaction I get when shooting them. Its been an avocation of mine, originally growing up in rural Ohio, for a lifetime.

Its quite obvious you don't know even know what a muzzleloader is. Typical. Just as a point of information, most, if not all states have a muzzle loading deer season. I'm sure you may find one or perhaps two that don't, if you are really interested. Most, if not all states also require that the projectile be, ideally .50 caliber and not less than .45 caliber. I'd be more than happy to hunt deer with a .30 caliber or .40 caliber projectile, but there are no muzzle loaders available using those calibers. If you have a beef, go to your local DEM and complain. Start a petition. Organize your friends and neighbors, and other like minded people. perhaps you can get the laws changed. otherwise, STFU.

Typo of SoB.
Ok that answers the question.
So the law can be changed to add semi automatic rifles and handguns to the restricted lists along with fully automatic weapons, grenade launchers and Apache helicopters.
That is what I thought. No need for those ARs they are unnecessary and only useful for shooting lots of people quickly.
I don't question anyone for owning something which is legal. I'm asking why are they legal.
And the 2nd Amendment does not answer that question. Plenty of 'arms' are restricted in US law. Like aformentioned automatic weapons.
lol someone's a bit upset. Sounds like I hit pretty close to home huh?
An AR is a rifle. It shoots bullets. The purpose of this gun and every other gun is to do damage and kill. In our country this was purposefully made legal. You don't like it and will not accept any rationale.
Freedom doesn't work that way. You don't have to justify freedom. You don't have to prove you are innocent in a court of law. You don't "need" 98% of everything you have in life. What does "need" mean anyhow? You don't "need" alcohol, yet it's legal, even though drinking and driving deaths eclipse gun homicides every year.

Exactly. People don’t “need” expensive sports cars or beach houses or wine with dinner. The actual number of needs for humans is quite small. Some people want boats, others think they’re a total waste of money. Some people want Mercedes AMGs, others are content with no car at all even though they could afford one. It’s no different with guns. Some people grew up with them or got exposed to them in the military, and enjoy shooting in a law abiding fashion. Just because you don’t agree with their choice, what gives you the right to tell them to give it up? Btw boats kill far more people in the U.S. each year than the 200 killed by semi-automatic rifles.
If you'd like to try and change the law to restrict the sale of all semi autos and handguns, have at it. You will not be successful. I like shooting my AR also. I hunt hogs with it in Florida, also do precision target competitions with it. Its legal, and as long as its legal I'll continue to shoot it. Even if they banned them, most that own them would be grandfathered. But that might depend on the state. In any event, I'm not particularly worried. As far as why they are legal, I'd consult a lawyer. I'm not one.

Not really, its just comical what people that haven't a clue come up with. Most should just keep silent so as to not divulge their ignorance. Heres a snippet. I do believe you may well fall into this category:
https://www.wideopenspaces.com/top-10-most-idiotic-anti-gun-quotes-from-politicians/But the freedom to own a grenade launcher, Browning M2 or an Apache helicopter was justified as wrong and removed from the American public. Nobody seems to mind much about that freedom being taken away.
There are many other rights which have to be fought for in the US such as abortion, rights to medical treatment and same sex relationships.
Freedom literally requires justification. The law outlines what freedoms US citizens have.
There are many other rights which have to be fought for in the US such as abortion, rights to medical treatment and same sex relationships.
As far as I'm aware, abortion is legal, IE the right to kill your unborn child for no good reason, if you should so desire. What "right" to medical treatment is currently being infringed and where? Same for same sex relationships. How and where?
But the freedom to own a grenade launcher, Browning M2 or an Apache helicopter was justified as wrong and removed from the American public. Nobody seems to mind much about that freedom being taken away.
Yes, sane adults have already worked all of that out for you. There are rules and laws on the books covering all of that and I'm happy with where they are. Good to go. Next issue....

I am not a gun nut. I don't own guns and frankly don't like being around them. That said, your comment reminded me of an argument I had with a gun advocate I run with quite often.
I was arguing that no one needed assault weapons for personal safety - that shotguns and hand guns would suffice - but he argued that our country is moving further and further away from an agreement on that issue due to mob-style tactics that have become more common in recent years. Basically, he said that when people see mobs of protesters taking over parts of a city, confronting people in restaurants and at their homes, it makes them fear that their single shots might not be effective. How do you protect yourself against 40 antifa protesters with one shotgun?
I want to be clear that he doesn't feel that way, but that it is an argument becoming more common in gun circles. People are scared.
