Could have been faster, but it was hot and very muggy. She ran a smart race.
Won in 4:03.59, lowering her PB by about 2 seconds, from 4:05.49, which she ran earlier this year.
Was just at the Ed Murphey Classic on another normal humid night here in Memphis, and all the times for the pros were many seconds behind their seed times from better climates. This is part of the reason why the Mid-South states have really bad distance runners. Breathing half water isn't fun.
Schlachtenhaufen translates to "Battle Pile"
that's a pretty badass name.

Um, the top four women in the 1500 all ran PBs. Two -- Schlachtenhaufen and McGee improved their times by over a second.
Conditions were brutal. Major humidity. High 80s. They PRd but give them a couple more seconds with better conditions and better pacing. The top 4 women can all run under 4:02 right now.

That's a pretty bold claim. Humidity sucks, but the closer you get to four, the harder every gain gets. Also "can all run sub 4:02" doesnt mean jack. You're pretty much always in better shape than your PB unless you ran the perfect race, in perfevt conditions, got the best sleep, perfect nutrition in the run up etc. Your IAAF page doesn't have an asterisk saying "her PB is 4:03 but she was actually in 4:01 high shape if only it were less humid."
That's not how it works wrote:

Bold? More like obvious. 78 dew point. Conditions were bad for racing. Felt like you were underwater. The pacer made it less than 750m before being passed and was erratic. So, yes, they are better in shape than the times run. Not sure why that’s a difficult concept.
If Kyle Merber has taken on the pace duties, the winner will not be faster than 3:40 regardless of conditions.
All those men have more performances slower than faster than that this season.
Yes, bold. As i said, the faster you go the harder the gains get. The gap 4:04 to 4:03 is smaller than 4:03 to 4:02 and so on.
In a race where no one was within a second of breaking 4:02, saying all the top 4 are all in 4:01 shape is bold. It isn't crazy or impossible, but it is a claim I wouldn't want to put too much money on or have to stand by if a gun was to my head. Only 13 American women have ever gone sub 4:02 meanwhile 34 (now 38) women have gone 4:04.4 or better (what Coburn got in 4th). It is a bold claim to realistically claim that sub 4:02 number would have bounced by 33% if only it wasn't so humid.
I'm also saying sure even if they might be in 4:02 shape, im sure tons of women have been over the years but guess what, only 13 have done it. Like i said, these women on the all time list don't get an asterisk for the humidity.
As i said, the faster you go the harder the gains get. The gap 4:04 to 4:03 is ***bigger*** than 4:03 to 4:02 and so on.
Those times don’t seem any slower than what everyone has run this year . The women’s 1500 was very fast . Kyle Merber has not set the world on fire this year in the men’s 1500 .
I never claimed they will actually run sub 4:02. Given the conditions of the evening and the pacing those women are in better fitness than the time. Yes, you have to go run the time. You are as good as your time run. Put them in the Rome/Rabat/Monaco meet and I believe they currently have the fitness to go faster, possibly much faster, than in Memphis. The weather, track, pacing, competition is all better.
Many women in shape to run sub 4:03/4:02 just don’t get the right opportunity. It’s hard to run that fast on a high school track, with a couple hundred people watching, in the middle of a hot summer and a pacer going less than 800m. The top 4 women last night can run faster. Will they this season? Probably not.
