sheesh. It's amazing Jim finished that well (and fast) just weeks after setting the WS course record. Kilian is at max fitness (he's been setting PRs on all his usual training courses) & Jim is in recovery, still.

Look at both their results at speedgoat. Done
Jim is super polarizing eh? Why can't he & Kilian both be great runners who are fun to watch & shoes just be shoes?

why is wejo and letsrun not putting this story on the front page?
useless website... or interests are not aligned?
just a month ago letsrun was all over walmsley on the 50m record and the WS100. nothing now. on one of the most amazing records and performances by jornet
Wejo figured out that almost nobody was interested in ultrarunning stories. He is also wearing all the promised Hoka shoes, he was supposed to give away.
respect to Jim and salut to Jornet!
Bbut letsrun wejo is a hypocrite and surely not running an honest website.
Two options:
1. only when the american flag is on top, there is a leading story
2. hoka has put a lot of money in the website
or a third actually which is both
The Sierre -Zanal should have been at the headlines especially after the series about trail running a couple of months ago.
The new name in town - Magnini! remember this name

I would suspect it has more to do with the demographics of their sponsored athletes? European runners tend to do better in the big-vert mountain races of Europe and Salomon sponsors more elite Europeans.
Why are you trying to be logical?

you sound super honest
you should run a website

rage on, bro!
Somehow true. Hoka has no good trail shoes. But more important proably is the fact, that Europeans are stronger in the mountains - and they are usually not Hola athletes...
Different race surfaces and different distances require different pacing. If we're being honest, the Hoka Carbon X project was a poor man's Breaking 2 exhibition, not a race. I'm not sure if I wrote that here / elsewhere, but if you saw it quoted, I definitely said it quietly to a number of people. At the very least Jim aggressive pacing brought a level of excitement and attention to the event that it would not have otherwise gotten. The fact that he narrowly edged the prior 50 mile world best showed just how good (hardly low hanging fruit) the mark was. No, 2:05 guys haven't trained for / raced the distance, but 4:50:00 for 50 miles is no dawdle. It may be true that many of the talented ultrarunners out there at the moment aren't racing 50 miles on the roads, but it's anyone's guess how well they'd fair if they were to try. It's a different skill set than running 100 miles on mountain trails, which is party what makes Jim's runs at WS, UTMB (even a rough day), Sierre Zinal, and yes, 13.1 and 50 miles on the roads exciting. He is a versatile runner. So is Kilian, likely more so. Sierre Zinal was a pretty good match up. But to dumb the debate down and speak in any kind of broad absolute strokes does no one, nor the debate itself, any service.
And to weigh in on the original post - no, the shoes ain't making or breaking things.
For the shoe / rules nerds, Sierre Zinal (and much of the mountain / trail running world) is not under the IAAF and not bound by its rules, but Kilian was wearing a prototype from Salomon for the race.

I agree, it would be nice if one of (if not the) most competitive mountain running races across all distances of the year would be reported on on this website. However, I can confirm that WeJo did distribute at least one pair of Hokas. I cannot speak of the other 9, but my impression is they were as well.

? i was backing him up
To be honest, I'm just totally flabbergasted by Killian's time there, and that 2nd was 2:26. Walmsley's time would have won it almost any other year-it's only 2 minutes off the old record! All three of those dudes and the the top 3 women as well competely had rockin' good runs on a warm, sunny day. I've run S-Z twice, once a crash and burn due to bad pacing, heat, blah blah, the second time got bumped twice and went flying off the path while trying to sprint across a scree slope 5KM from the finish. It's pretty hardcore.
Walmsley loses to Jornet because one of them is the greater mountain runner of all time and the other is not the greatest mountain runner of all time.
I say this as someone who is high on Walmsley and low on Hokas.

Good analysis!
Hoka consistently has athletes finish on podiums in all the major ultras.
Ludovic Pommeret won UTMB in 2016.
mooonshot wrote: Those shoes are a disadvantage in the mountains and most technical terrain.
It's not Walmsley's fault (although he's not recovered from Western States), but too much foam between the foot and the terrain. No HOKA athlete has ever won a major mountain race like UTMB - it's always Salomon or Asics guys.
Not a great trail shoe. Great for flat dirt running, but get into scree and the skags like Norway and Scotland, you have no chance with that footwear choice.
Let's assume for argument's sake you are right (though I disagree), the most technical course Jim has raced on I believe is Speedgoat 50km, which still doesn't come to the technical level of a number of Skyraces (eg, Tromso). If the thread was started b/c of Sierre Zinal, the course is - for anyone used to anything remotely technical - essentially a very hilly groomed dirt path. Lacking footwear to handle technical terrain would not be an issue here. I also don't anticipate it being an issue for Jim for a while. He has Ultravassan this week, then hopefully marathon training followed by Comrades training.
As an aside, Asics is a funny example to bring. Xavier is literally the only top end mountain runner I'm aware of off the top of my head who has run well in a prominent mountain trail race. A single example doesn't prove anything.
