Read all about it but don't forget to read the Church's version and not just those that rabidly hate the Church.

This thread is about:
1. Original OP's question as to what the "Mormon" stance is with running no Sundays and do they abide by it (that's what I got out of it)
2. Does taking a day off a week help with running or not
3. Attacks on the "Mormon" Church and rebuttals to those attacks.

1. I think the scriptures are clear and teachings of the Church state it should be a day of rest as much as possible. Lots of member strive to keep the Sabbath day a holy day and others do not.
2. I think taking a day off is a good idea to prevent injuries and burnout. Long-term I think it is best. Bernard Lagat takes a day off a week and I'm sure there are many other accomplished runners that do likewise that you all know better than me about.
3. There are lots of bigots out there. Would be nice if they would stick to the original thread. I have a hard time letting outright lies and miss-information go unchallenged. If any are interested, read what anyone has to say but don't forget to hear what the Church has to say about it also to be fair.
Mormonism is a heretical cult and is not compatible with orthodox Christianity. Most Mormons are very nice people, but this won't get them into heaven.

Geez dude. I feel sorry for you. Do you want the Church to be true?

Blamb61, it's probably wasted effort. Some people ask sincere questions and will appreciate a sincere answer. But any thread with a Mormon angle brings out the haters who feel justified in posting insults and outright lies. Has that one dude showed up to say that BYU is a clown college yet? He's a regular. Trying to reason with them is mostly a lost cause because they will just spiral downward into another round of fiction. It's probably worth pointing out the blatant falsehoods for the curious bystanders (like the Olympic medals you mention), but you can probably count on most readers figuring out that a lot of these people are not quite all there.

Yeah, but is the part about believing Jesus lives on planet Kalob correct? Or is that whole post supposed to be a joke?

As is usually the case, some parts are true, some are badly distorted, some are the most negative possible spin, and some are complete fabrications. It doesn't matter to the people who post it because they don't care about what's true, or about understanding other people. All they want to do is generate controversy, so it's largely a waste of time to wade through the distortions and explain. In this particular case: Mormon cosmology does imagine the universe in terms of familial relationships so that Jesus and Satan and every human being are all siblings; there is indeed mention of a planet called Kolob close to God (which I think is awesome, actually); but the idea that Jesus lives on this planet, or that Jesus and Satan would reside in the same place, is entirely fictional.

The entire religion of Mormonism is, itself, a distortion.
Raping children (masked as marriage to tweens), clearly racist passages in their "bible" (curse of Cain was that he was turned black, so therefore all black people are cursed), and a completely missing historical record of any civilization described in the Book of Mormon being present anywhere in America during the time period (any ancient horse bones dug up recently?).
Not to mention that "Reformed Egyptian," the language that Smith said he translated from, is not a real language.
Not to mention that the Garden of Eden and Adam-ondi-Ahman are meant to be in Missouri.
It's not crazier then just about every other religion (Jehovah's Witnesses, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc.), but it's still absolutely insane.
The Mormon Church brings the hate on themselves.
But let me tell you Mormon women are tigers in the sack.
Pfffft I did a search and literally nobody has ever called BYU a clown college on this forum
Brigham Young Had 55 Wives. Some of these women were already married to other prominent members of the Mormon church, but that didn't stop Young - he married them anyway.
Some Of The Eleven Witnesses To The Gold Plates Never Laid Eyes On Them. those witnesses later said that they only saw the plates with their "spiritual eyes," not their physical ones. (It is curious that the Book of Mormon needs affidavits to claim that it is valid. This is a typical tactic of con artists. The Bible doesn't have a list of witnesses in the preface, because it is supposedly the word of God, and God doesn't need anyone to back up his claims.) (Why would God need a con man using magic rocks to translate the golden plates, and why would God need to hide the golden plates? Couldn't God just present the Book of Mormon already in English?)
John Lee And His Militia Took Out All But 17 People In The Mountain Meadows Massacre. Brigham Young ordered fellow Mormon John Lee to gather up a group of men to form the militia and carry out the Mountain Meadows Murders. Lee's militia slaughtered every member of the Arkansas party, except for those under the age of seven. Lee had set a trap, pretending to offer safe passage, then turned on the Fancher party to kill them. 120 people were murdered by Mormons in the massacre.
In 1843, Joseph Smith decided that members of the Mormon religion would practice polygamy. He apparently came to this decision after wanting to have sex with his 14 year old housekeeper. Smith's decree caused some dissent among his followers, some of whom split off and formed the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which didn't practice polygamy at all. In fact, after Smith's death, his widow, Emma, joined the Reorganized church, which was then run by her son, Joseph Smith III.
If a Mormon has a problem with any rules, he’s welcome to his opinion—as long as he keeps it to himself. A Mormon who writes articles or makes public statements against the church can get in a lot of trouble, and the church is ready to stop them. The church has a committee called “The Strengthening Church Members Committee,” which is sort of like a Mormon version of the NSA. They spend all their time reviewing and keeping files on every member of the church—especially about everything the members write. If a member is caught criticizing the leadership, the committee notifies their bishop, who is required to confront the person about it. They sit down and try to get the member to stay in line—or else. If a member doesn’t comply, they can pay for it in more ways than just being excommunicated. Allegedly, people have lost their jobs for speaking out against the church.
Mormons can’t do much, really—except lie. They claim to share the Ten Commandments with Christians, Muslims, and Jews, but that commandment about not giving false testimony doesn’t really hold the same ground in Mormonism that it does in the other religions. Many Mormons have claimed that Mormons are raised “with the idea that it’s okay to lie if it’s for a higher cause.” Apparently, throughout the history of the church, it has been okay to lie to outsiders if it protects the church.
Since Satan allegedly has power over the lakes and rivers, Mormon missionaries aren't allowed to swim.
I know a lot of Mormons and think they are generally really nice people. Always willing to help out, when asked. I got a flat tire at work, and one of my Mormon coworkers stopped and helped me change it. Generally, very nice people.
I also think a lot of their modern doctrine and practices help them to lead healthy, happy lives. The only thing that bothers me with their current doctrine is the anti-gay stuff. One of their prophets will probably have a "revelation" about that soon.
And to me, that's kind of ok too. I actually like an adaptable, "living" church that can admit when they are wrong and change. The early church history is full of ugly practices that several have brought up, but modern Mormons don't believe in that stuff anymore.
That being said, the origin story of their religion seems obviously false to me. But I feel the same way about every religion. It's probably more likely that Joseph Smith found some gold plates in a foreign language and "translated" them that some dude rose from the dead after three days. Or performed any of the ridiculous miracles described in the New Testament.
