I'd rather see the government waste my tax dollars on something useless than use it to pay off your student loan. That's how much I hate student loan forgiveness.

It seems like it is going to be a hard to sell the idea that people who went to college should have their loans paid for by the government when most Americans don't graduate from college. Why should people who figured the cost wasn't worth it for them to go to college pay for those who went and experienced college?
Parents who sacrificed a lot to save to send their kids through college are going to feel like suckers if other kids have their loans paid off by the govt. Students who worked while going to college to decrease the debt they accumulated while going to college are going to feel like suckers too.
I can see legitimate reasons why people can argue for student loans to be part of bankruptcy. If someone is bankrupt and declares it and their credit is screwed for 7 years, that should also include student loans. It would mean that student loan interest rates would increase but that is worth it imo.
I also am for programs that the government would pay for student loans if someone commits and works for undeserved communities. That makes sense to me.

Well, those folks aren’t the folks most likely to pay. The point of the program is to buy the votes of the masses by foisting the expense onto a very small cross section of the tax paying base (and thus alienating only a small number of voters in exchange for buying the big block of votes of student loan borrowers).
I agree, making them dischargable I’m bankruptcy is the easiest solution.
Thing that bugs me the most is that the loans can’t be discharged but interest still accrues way above prime.
The loan should either be interest free and non-dischargeable or with interest but dischargeable.

This is correct. The plan has no chance of passing in Congress. Even if Trump loses in 2020, the Republicans will keep (and are likely to improve upon) their Senate majority.
I generally agree with your sentiments, especially since about one out of five borrowers have never made a payment on their loans.
Here is my Better Than Bernie Solution:
EVERYBODY gets a $200,000 check from U.S. Dept of Treasury, then conditionally in order -
Those who have student loans must apply this amount to any and all of their balances.
Those who have government-backed mortgages must apply this to any and all of their balances.
Those who have any debt at all must apply this to any and all of their balances.
To everybody else / whatever is leftover, use however you want.
At same time going forward:
No government loans or government backed student or mortgages loans.
Colleges must issue their own loans directly to the students, no intermediation of the loans.
Default of these loans dischargeable by bankruptcy.
No debt-denominated federal reserve notes, only greenbacks issued directly by U.S. Dept of Treasury, similar to as Jackson, Lincoln and JFK intended. The money entering the money supply as the government spends it.
Banks not allowed to issue any loans beyond their deposits; no fractional reserve lending. Banking back to deposits at 3%, loans at 6%, tee time at the golf course at 3 o'clock, all living in middle class neighborhoods.
Couldn't be worse than the bank bailouts in the double-digit trillions.
good for grandpa. good for you.
Hope you aren't picking up any farm subsidies btw.
0/10.
I had no idea Andrew Yang posted on here... good luck man.
If it makes you feel better your tax dollars will be used to spend $340 million on Trump’s golf outings this year.
Much more useful than giving some average people more money to spend back into the economy each month.

You're a mean one!
Nothing worse than people who accept handouts from the governments.

And if it makes you feel any better, tax payers are already paying for student loan forgiveness for thousands and thousands of Americans (and that number is growing). See the Public Student Loan Forgiveness Program. I'm thrilled to take your free money!

Kind of how a lot people feel about farm subsidies, especially those doled out because Hair Fuhrer's trade wars have effectively closed the lucrative Chinese market for U.S. agricultural goods. Gotta' prop up failing farms to make sure that those rural voters stay in line and the big ag corporations hit their margins, right?
Your Uncle Sam billboard along I-5 is always good for a laugh on the drive to and from Seattle.

Farm subsidies are given on the premise that I actually provide food for all you spoiled kids. I don't just get rewarded for stupid actions which is what student loan forgiveness is.
Glad you like the sign, I got plenty more material.
Student loans are a modern form of indentured servitude. The US economy is dependent on the self-enslaved specialist workforce that turns the gears of high-tech industries. If the industries had to train their own workforce, they'd fail, as their profits are too low to justify the investment. This is the hidden bubble that will collapse catastrophically pretty soon.
Sounds like socialism to me. Government using taxpayer funds to rescue inefficient and poorly managed (stupid actions?) businesses that cannot successfully compete in an open marketplace. For all your boot strappy libertarian posturing, I'm surprised at your candor with regards to shamelessly and voluntarily suckling at the government's teat.
So much for convictions, eh comrade? You have revealed what you truly are and have also advertised your price.

Either turn a profit through capitalism or sit down.

We don't have an "open marketplace." That's why the recent round of farm subsidies was handed out. We would love to compete in an "open marketplace" that's not the world we live in right now.
