Then why did he go out in 57 and 4:08? I was once a huge chelimo fan; but with all the jersey grabbing at the finish and watching his last race, he's really lost his luster.

He was also throwing in bursts until he finally stopped and let the peloton catch up to him. Really just a bizarre race from him.

You do understand that Chelimo still had to stay in contention to place, would have liked to defend his title, but didn’t see it as his duty to drag the Bowerman Workout Club drafters to qualifying times, right? So why not create separation early then see who else is serious about qualifying for Worlds?
I won’t defend the jersey grabbing but the rest is heads-up racing. There seems to be an implicit entitlement mentality surrounding Chelimo’s “poor sportsmanship” as if he owes some duty to anyone else in the field.
Deer Bowerman Workout Club, maybe you guys should race more and throw less tantrums when it’s time to tag in for a lap or two. Because NOP is racing, racking up titles and WRs year around while no one in the entire group of Bowerman men has a snowball’s chance of medaling.
(Maybe Centro. I’ll never rule him out if he starts.)

Waaah. Someone grabbed my tee tee! Chelimo ran too fast. Waaah. He wanted me to man up. Waaaah!
There's a good reason why Chelimo is everyones favorite and the guys who lack the balls to make their own destiny won't ever be.
Paul Chelimo = xtra xtra badass.

First of all, 4:08 pace is barely under 13, so it's not insane for Chelimo. If you throw out that first lap it's basically 13 minute pace, which is pretty reasonable for him.
Second, he didn't know if anyone was going to go with him when he went out that hard, and he also didn't realize they were going to do all the work for them and not do any pacing. A fast time is a big accomplishment in this sport on its own, he didn't see why he should be doing them any favors.
Third, doing all the pacing is actually detrimental from a physiological standpoint (you're doing more work in the wind). Surging put them on a more equal playing field.
Now, there's an argument to be made that maybe neither of them would have been able to keep up with Chelimo if he'd gone all the way to 5K, but weighing that risk against the lack of help and the gesticulations from the guy in second or third (I forget his name already) I can see why Chelimo might want to slow down a bit and rely on his kick. I thought it was tactically savvy. Shame it didn't work out, but Lomong is a cool guy and the finish was great.
Woody “Wait We’re Racing!?” Kincaid
Anyone know which no-name “closed” meet Jerry will try to qualify his guys at? Any word on who will rabbit through ~4800 meters since Paul won’t play nice? ?
It would have been more interesting to see what Chelimo would have done if Kincaid and Lomong had taken their turns at the front without slowing things down.
Can someone tell me who is going to worlds in the 5k? I know Drew Hunter and Hassan Mead. Does Chelimo have the standard?

Run faster.
Glad I could help.

Yeah what if we had this thing where like you get a big group of guys who agree to run a certain distance with a goal finish time in mind and they like, I dunno, they each like try to like put in the work no matter what to get it done and like see who comes out ahead you know?
I swear there’s, like, a term for this— a noun that’s at least as much a verb, too— but I like can’t recall right now.

He is a badass, but even you can admit he ran a stupid race. Run it hard from the gun? Fine, but commit and don't let up half way through. Any advantage he gained with his breakaway was lost with his decision to run 70's behind Kincaid in the second half.
Chelimo didnt run a stupid race, he beat all runners who had a qualifying time. Because of that he's going to WC. Lomong had a free roll, and had the luxury of going for the win without concern for time.
A stupid race is not having the courage to make your own destiny.

I guess you forgot about that whole, "the USATF said no chasing the standard this year after USAs this year."
From my perspective, the first three of them all ran stupid races.
#1- They went out way too fast, 57 the first lap.
That's a sub 12 minute 5k pace, a very stupid thing to do.
#2- Then they let the pace lag so much in the middle that the rest of the field caught up to them.
Again, that was a stupid thing to do for all three of them.
None of them accomplished anything by using such bad race plans and tactics.
The ones who ran better were the ones who caught up to them, though they weren't as fast physically.

Why would Mohammed Farah and Lasse Viren take the lead at times during 500m races? They either raced in the front or raced in the back often. Chelimo got the rail. You go out there and beat Chelimo in a 5000m race, then you can hold a press conference and tell the world you raced 5000m better than Chelimo

Have you ever thought that there is something to be gained from running different types of races to prepare for all the crazy stuff people might throw at you in a World Championship? Ben True caught up to them, he sure as h*ll didn't "run better" than Chelimo.

So Chelimo went in 57, just in case he has to go out in 54 in the World Championships to show everyone.
Yep, that will sure show them all right.

Ben True wasn't as well prepared, but he certainly did run better in the race than Chelimo, who ran like a fool.
