Anyone see that American Made movie starring Tom Cruise? Funniest movie I've seen since Tropic Thunder.

I love how some posters will disagree with a thoughtful post but only a smart-ass one-liner.
This thread was originally: U.S. Olympic athlete, 1980 v. James Earl Carter.
This thread has turned into: James Earl Carter v. Reagan & George H.W. Bush
Let's review James Earl Carter:
A multi-generation peanut farmer and George Governor basically moved to Iowa in order to do well in Iowa Caucus circa 1975.
After Nixon and after Ford pardoned Nixon, the nation wanted a clean hands outsider. The southern states were up for grabs by both parties as long as one was a southern Democrat then. White Democrats were kind of split in a few different groups then.
The nation got an outsider. Carter had a tougher personality then than he does now. Carter made no effort to get along with journalists. Journalists will turn on a president if a U.S. President is not nice to them. See Georgetown parties. Carter made not too much of an effort to get along with northern Democrats. Recall, Democrats ran McGovern in 1972 as their candidate. The Democratic Platform was more liberal in aggregate in 1972 than the platform ever was and more liberal than a Democratic platform since. Carter's policies were slightly more conservative than Bill Clinton's. There were still racists Dixiecrats in the south. Carter wasn't conservative enough for them. Liberal Democrats saw Carter as too conservative. In a lot of ways, Carter was most similar in some ways as Republican moderates of that era. They were not really Carter's friends. This basically sums up why Carter was not greatly liked during 1970's.
Economics: O.P.E.C. controlled a larger source of global known oil & gas reserves in 1970's than they are controlling today. O.P.E.C. off and on created oil shortages. People used to wait in line at gas stations in big cities for as long as 90 minutes to get gasoline. There was Stagflation then. Stagflation is a recession along with rising prices/inflation. The federal reserve was neutral. Then in 1978, Carter placed Paul Volcker in as Chairman of Federal Reserve. Volcker was an inflation hawk. Volcker raised the Overnight Fed Funds Rate in the high teens, maybe over 20% in order to break inflation. Initially, it made inflation worse, then Volcker's efforts caused a recession. As stated, Volcker was an inflation hawk. He did tame inflation. By 1982, nothing to do with Reagan the economy began growing sans runaway inflation.
I neglected to state the special forces rescue mission which failed, 1980. The mission was high risk. Kids, your daddy and grand pa would have said nice words about Carter if that mission were successful.
Kids, your daddy and grand pa love Reagan because they think he killed hyper-inflation. They they think Reagan made the economy grow. Reagan played the part of president better on tv.
Reasons why Reagan was not a good man.
For a political reason, Reagan placed mostly U.S.M.C. in barracks in Lebanon. Marines had a visible profile. Too visible. Reagan would not allow Marines even to chamber their weapons without HIS permission. A large truck with explosive material ran into the barracks and drove past Marine sentry. Two-hundred-forty-one Marines dead and one US Navy Corpsman dead. Reagan invaded Grenada a week later.
Reagan, after Lebanon disaster maintained his focus in western hemisphere. Reagan's C.I.A. funded the Contras v. Sandinistas. Contras right wing/Fascists. Sandinistas were left wing/socialists. Thomas "Tip" O'Neill, was Speaker of the House. A man with a strong personality. No way was he going to give Reagan money for a silly Fascist war in Central America. C.I.A. and Reagan wanted the war. C.I.A. needed to raise money on their own. U.S. military, post-Viet Nam conflict had switched over from M-16 A1 rifles to M-16-A2 rifles. Rifles went down to Central America. Cocaine with C.I.A. went north to U.S. cities. M-16 A1 rifles also went to Iran for cash. That was supposed to by less complicated. As we all know today, C.I.A. contract employees got arrested. See Barry Seal.
Do most of you posters know the truth about Reagan administration while you are cutting down Carter and by default praising Reagan, V.P. George H.W. Bush, C.I.A., William Casey, Admiral Poindexter and Lt, Col. Oliver North? Do you posters know who are praising Reagan and cutting down Carter know that North and Poindexter are convicted felons for Iran-Contras? Poindexter and North took one for the team. Also, Attorney General William Barr kept George H.W. Bush from being prosecuted for Iran-Contras. Yes, that William Barr!
Enough of all the cutting down Carter and praising of Reagan the Criminal!

I'm a huge Carter guy. But Carter's weaknesses did him in.
He had a democratic congress on his watch, but still couldn't build up any type of relationship with congress to get support. And since he started to look weak to the democratic party, Ted Kennedy came on strong, making the primary a tough one for him, where the democratic party was split. He went in against regan without a chance in hell. He supporters had already deserted him, and even some democrats voted for Regan.
Him giving away the Panama Canal was proof that his Foreign Policies were shite, bro.
Carter was a great president in his own right, but as far as FP, War, etc. He was weak in that area,
Carter a great President???
You are one uninformed individual.
Nixon, now there was a great president. Ford was damn good, too.
Think you got your facts wrong there, buddy. Plenty of the west did compete, including US strongest ally = Britain.
How much strong arming by US State Dept. on KENYA to get them to boycott AGAIN?
1. "The Soviet military was already in Afghanistan at the request of the legitimate government = WRONG!
2. "to fight terrorist rebels organized by the CIA" = WRONG!
3. "This occurred in a context of the 70s detente" = WRONG!
4. " involved a "no insurrections" agreement that the Soviets were honoring" = WRONG!
5. "when no factions of the government were opposed to their presence" = WRONG!
6. "as a reaction to the US starting the war" = WRONG!
7. "hypocrisy of comparing that to Hitler" = partially WRONG!
8. "US invasion and occupation" = WRONG!
9. "next time the US gets an olympics, will you be calling for a boycott" = WRONG!
You are ignorant to an incredible degree. Educate yourself and please take your dark web conspiracy theory crap somewhere else?

More crap laid down above than a field full of Angus cattle could do.
Congratulations.
Granted, except for Decker, no U.S. athlete was a lock for a medal, but to say "a medal would have been a huge shock" is very inaccurate. Do you mean Ruth Wysocki and James Robinson had no shot in the 800, Jan Merrill had no shot in the 3000 and the 1980 World XC Champ Craig Virgin had no shot in 10K? In 1980s, Steve Scott, Centrowitz Sr, Tom Byers, Salazar, Beardsley, Rogers were all ranked inside or just outside the top-5-7 in their event...how could you suggest they had no shot at a medal?
givemeabreak: Reagan met with Mujahideen leaders in the White House, ran a program in Afghanistan to train "freedom fighters," among them Bin Laden.
TrackCoach: Who would you have taken in the 1980 Marathon Trials, had the games gone on for the US as usual? (Everyone showed up, not just who did.)

In 1986, when they met with Reagan, the mujahideen were Afghanistan rebels fighting Soviet forces that had invaded their country to maintain a "client" administration. The US government - unsurprisingly - supported them. Bin Laden was part of the mujahideen at that time. No one foresaw Al Qaeda - including Bin Laden, whose enemies at the time were the Soviets.
