He is also constantly changing his name which is pretty weird too. [/quote]
Maybe he runs the times under a pseudonym. Maybe he's really a good runner but you only know his mild-mannered alter-ego.

I mostly just lie about my times while pushing my way up towards the start line. "Pardon me folks, 16-minute-guy coming through. Easier to pass you here than out on the course. Excuse me..."
I love that quarter mile of open road when the gun goes off, before everyone catches and passes me. I really had no idea I could get a JOB with my shtick.
Stop using bad grammar and then maybe we'll read your post. JFC
"I'm 100% positive that he has never RUN these times and is overall just a kind of weird guy so I'm not really sure how to approach the situation."
Marathon investigation will not be shutting down and I will investigate all allegations against this person.

1/10. With the internet people cannot lie about their times.
If it was a pre internet time; example would be something from the early 90's as not all races list all the finishers, just maybe the winner and something like the top 5. He could say he was 7th place in a major race.
There’s people like this all over the country. They say they were a top athlete and become personal trainers. It’s like 250+ pound women who become personal trainers and for whatever reason people pay them money to learn how to eat and workout. If they can get away with scamming people then more power to them.
The reason it effects people in the community is because he tells tons of customers about his “amazing feats” and gives them terrible running advice and they take it cuz they think he used to be fast, that is not good.

* affects not effects.
People have been getting duped for the entire history of humankind.
If they did some research and asked some questions, they'd figure out the truth. If you were more savvy, you'd figure out a way to (1) let it go or (2) expose him without looking like a petty loser
get a life.
I think every running community has one or two of these people. There are a lot of women that do this. They start running and decide to create an Insta profile. It turns into a website/blog with a coaching service and they start selling products through all of their platforms. No one realizes that they don't run fast. They just kind of project a lifestyle that people want to believe.
This is less common with men, and when it happens that man typically presents signs of mental instability. I would be hesitant to go around calling people out. Unless you are prepared for the retribution that may come as a result of you taking away this guy's identity and livelihood. That is a question only you can answer.
If u is truly concerned, have a quiet heart to heart with this person. Its kinda hard to do without confronting and accusing. which makes ppl defensive and pushes them away. I guess its a skill..
This is why we just mind our own business, right? ?? #notHelpfulRigh?

This is another reason I’m being purposely vague and seeking advice on how to go about the situation. And you have it nailed as far as that first paragraph.
I don’t think you’ve worked in run specialty before. People come in with zero information about running, most new customers come in and say “I’m not a runner” first thing. They’ve heard from their friends who did the same the great advice and customer service these stores provide versus a Big 5 or a Dick’s, so they soak it all up. They also buy things they don’t need if they think the person helping them is fast and credible. That’s the reality of run specialty stores and that’s how this guy is taking advantage of people. If you don’t think that’s problematic then I don’t know what to tell ya.
No job worth having has ever been granted based on running credentials, real or fake.
I would be interested to know how he used his alleged running exploits to get jobs and special privileges?
You seem to me like one of those Instagram runners that gets riled up over someone getting some Sensah socks or Hammer gel packets for free.
Who the hell cares about what he is getting?

No serious runner is taking the JO at the running stores advice to heart.

So like any other business they take advantage of the knowledge gap to sell you crap you don't need. Bike shops, auto parts, home improvement stores they all do it.

Like if I walk into a bar in Santa Monica and spread the word I'm a 3:37 1500 guy, will they flock around me and want to come back to my luxurious apa rtment?
