Ok but what about "local elite" road whores who literally travel to easy money races and earn more than 15k.
Anybody with mid 14s can cherrypick easy $500-1k here and there.
Disclaimer: Former "pro" road whore now turned Master's road whore :)

I think placing a minimum salary as the sole defining characteristic of being a professional is short-sighted.
As an example:
Single A baseball players are making about $5000.00 for a 5 month season. Everyone in the minors make the same amount depending on your level. Yes, most drafted players get a signing bonus, however, most signing bonuses are small, particularly late round picks and people not drafted.
AAA players make about $15,000.
I don't think anyone would walk-up to a minor league baseball player and proclaim to him that he is not a real professional baseball player until he makes the majors.
Being a professional is about accepting the lifestyle and commitment of a professional. A 100% commitment. Survival jobs or even real careers do not disqualify one from being considered a professional.
In the world of acting, most actors and models are considered professional once they get their first paid principal gigs (not as a background actor). The thing about acting is that you only work 15-20 times a year and the rest of the time you are 100% immersed in the lifestyle. The training, the auditioning, etc... The entire goal is to become a member of Screen Actors Guild. A professional runner can be someone that has hit the OTQ and made $1000 in road races but they are 100% committed to the lifestyle: training, diet, racing, lifestyle. Let's be honest in that the USATF only paid the winners $8000 so.....not a lot of money going around.
FWIW, in my world, someone sponsored by a corporation is simply a Brand Ambassador.
Chances are, knowing how Letsrun works, the OP is basically just trying to be a d&ck and push buttons. He either makes zero money running or he is offended that so many people call themselves a professional runner because he selfishly feels that too many people making that claim diminishes the strength of the label.
Just an opinion from the bleachers.

Semi-pro got it right. This is an old term, I guess younger people without an interest in sports history have not heard the term. Semi-pro is still a valid term, and a useful one.
The Japanese Women's National Team that won the World Cup in 2011 had several semi-pro players at the beginning of the year, several of whom were forced to find other work after a tsunami severely damaged their employers nuclear power plant. Many prominent Olympic medalists are still semi-pros.

In the US, it's around 30 thousand a year.
You're actually off by a lot:

The top MLB prospects have contracts that pay them far more than the typical minor league salary.

Not accurate. All minor league players make the same salary depending on their level. Their signing bonuses may be different, but their salary is the same. The only way you can negotiate a higher salary in the minor leagues is if you have ever been added to the 40-man roster (for even one day) or if you become a minor league baseball free agent. In order to become a free agent in the minors, you have to play out your existing contract or stay in the minors for 7 years (the length of time your MLB team owns your rights).
In addition, we are not talking about the elite players as it relates to someone calling themselves a pro runner. We are talking about lower-level runners vs lower level professional baseball players. In addition, I only used baseball because it is clear that any baseball player in the minors is a professional baseball player even if they are only making $5k a year.
All of this information is readily available but fairly common knowledge to those that follow the sport closely.

I once won $100 at a race. For giggles, I occasionally tell people I used to be a pro runner.

If you live in the US and you don't make at least the US minimum wage, you are not a pro.
Truth! And if you're not a pro, you're a HOBBY JOGGER!!!
So Roger Bannister, Herb Elliot, Peter Snell and Alberto Juantorena were all hobby joggers?
I have to agree with Coach Hadsell. I think a big part is if you’re loving the lifestyle of a professional and making some money doing it. Doesn’t have to be a certain amount. Good to see you back, Coach.
I recently made $2000 in just a month, including stipends and prize money. So no matter what happens in the future, whether I win more or not, I'm a former pro runner and the OP and suck can on that!
You don't make minimum wage, you're not a pro. Sounds right to me. We need something to shut up all these idiots like the guy above.

What are your athletic, academic, and financial credentials? Those should be relevant for those who make statements like the above.
My guess, struggling for a BQ, former club runner at mid-major or 3rd tier commuter university and still living in mom's basement, while working a dead end job.

Keep telling yourself that, pro. Whatever makes you feel better about wasting your life and never making it big. When you do finally get spit out you will be years behind in the game of life. I hope the memories are worth being poor the rest of your life.
