Anyone associated with soccer in the US knows that the problem is expensive club teams as others have stated. The US soccer system favors tactics/plays/formations/structure. In every other place soccer is played there is almost no structure as others have noted. It's just pick up play and in some cases it's just kids in the street with a ball trying to get by their friends.
The #1 thing I think US Soccer can do is to eliminate you clubs for kids under 14. They should fund a system where pick up games are the only thing played. They could have adults run organization where on Saturday and Sunday they have pick up games played all day in parks across the country. They shouldn't keep score just running time, 15 min pick up games on small fields.
Additionally we need to send our teens to Europe, Central America, South America to play. The NCAA system is garbage, MLS is garbage and the club system is garbage.
