It makes perfect sense from a physiological standpoint as it taxes different-er energy systems.
800-10k would be ideal
My concern was he’d get injured. When you’re in shape to PR and everything is going great that means your body is transmitting energy like never before and the risk of injury is higher than ever. Good call to not race.
I think Herb Elliott could've pulled this off in the 1960 Olympic game's.
Said Aouita
It was really cool that he even entertained the idea.
But, thankfully, cooler heads prevailed (especially after such a hard and fast close in the 10KM the night before).
On to the 5KM?
Ummm...Ever hear of Paavo Nurmi???
Yeah, is he doing the 5k still???

Eight-hundred metres and 10000m would only be ideal if an 800m runner were foolish enought to average 110 miles a week.
Interesting and unusual 10000 doubles:
Zdzisław Krzyszkowiak: Gold in the 1960 Olympic steeple and 7th in the 1960 Olympic 10000

You do know, Paavo Nurmi did not earn 1500m & 10000m gold medals in same Olympiad. Also, during Nurmi's era, amateur rules were very strict. Nurmi set the mile world record of 4:10.xx in 1923. Walter George was a 4:12.xx one mile guy in 1886. George raced for saloon bookies so George was not an amateur. I doubt Nurmi would have beaten George in a 1500m race. George had no real competitors at one mile distance. George raced an unofficial, 4:10.xx one mile, circa 1885.
Sad that Lopez, and other Bowerman and NOP athletes, declared in events they did not compete in.
Stole spots from guys and gals further down the list.

Anyone with the USATF qualification standard is assured of a spot.

They earned their spots and wanted to keep their options open. If they were sure ahead of time they definitely wouldn't compete in those events, I would agree with you. But they thought they might compete, so I say fair game.
Gatlin is another, in theory he stole a spot in the final.
Ever heard of Peter Snell? Arthur Lydiard had him doing hundred mile weeks, with a 20+ miler on weekends. 800m Olympic Gold 1960 (Rome) and 1964 (Tokyo). Oh, and 1500m Gold Tokyo.
