+1. This is basically why we'll never see an interior African country host

The Olympics are only about maximizing income for the IOC, sponsors, and broadcasting companies. The performance of the athletes is a distant second, especially for events few people really care about like the marathon and other distance events. That's why few events are held at the ideal time of day or ideal location for the athletes. Otherwise, the summer Olympics held in the southern hemisphere (Rio and Sydney) would be in their summer: December, January, and February.
I've long felt that the Olympics--both winter and summer--should be held at permanent sites, ideally in Scandinavia. They would be the best chance for good weather, stable governments, decent transportation infrastructure (and, hell, Lillehammer hosted the winter games not that long ago, so facilities should be more or less in place)...
In addition, each member nation would contribute to the cost of the Games. Base it on number of athletes or GDP or something like that. Host nation would keep the revenue from ticket sales for facility maintenance.
I haven't completely thought it through, and I'm sure that there are bugs in this idea, but after years of seeing games held in horrible weather, lousy facilities, etc., it couldn't be any worse.
I know that this is going to be hard for many of you to grasp, but weather conditions for distance runners ranks approximately 14,987,522nd on the organizers' list of priorities.
Can't they have the Olympics somewhere like Melbourne. I'm sure it would do well there and the city is really strong. It will literally be winter there in the summer so you don't have to worry about heat. Melbourne has nice winters. It is cosmopolitan as fukk and you can get the best coffee in the world on any street. Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing Bekele destroy the field in Tokyo with the sun in the horizon with Mount Fuji and the red and white Eiffel tower building glistening above.
You realize July and August is only summer for half the globe...

Where does the potential for thousands of fans dying of heat stroke rank in those priorities?
Youre dumb if you really think fans will be dying from watching the olympics

Not sure what world you live in but weather conditions for the marathon are not factored into the decision when selecting a host city.

Atlanta was hot in regards to temperature, but the Tokyo is on another level with humidity

The were the best choice ( yes including under table $$$ or bribes). I hope you don’t mean it was a bad selection because of the marathon, which is only one measly event, because if that’s the case you must be some sort of fool.

I lived there for a couple of years once.
August in Tokyo is not so bad. It's June you want to avoid, with humidity at 90% and permanent fog/fug/whatever, which you need a Katana to slice through. By August, it's sunny and nice, and just gets better until December
This criticism is levelled at every Olympics except, perhaps, London. Which hit 39'C today....

The IOC, the organization that FIFA races to be the most corrupt sports governing body.
