I never really thought of Key West as a "city."

It really depends on the person. For instance, I think Hollywood, CA is the most overrated city in the world and Irvine, CA is the greatest city in the world. Because Hollywood is just dirty people being dirty. And Irvine is just perfect in every way. Others say Hollywood is their dream city and Irvine is the most boring place on the planet.
Completely agree on Hollywood being overrated. I could not wait to leave when I visited. Another overrated one in my opinion is Napa. I thought it was overpriced, dirty, and touristy. Sonoma, on the other hand, was great.
Most underrated:
Colorado (all around best IMO except for cost, good jobs, good lifestyle, bike paths network)
Charlottesville, VA
San Jose Costa Rica
Most overrated:
- Boston- just took T trains everywhere to get around. Dark and gloomy winters. Even parking cars in 24hr security monitored garages did not protect from vandals. Car glass windows often smashed in corporate, camera monitored parking lots (nothing to take inside). spent 1hr+ in cars commuting on pothole highways for business travel to various locations, accents like nails on a chalkboard. Went running and on numerous occasions needed to defend myself chasing after people who wanted to beat me up, almost got stabbed
- Minneapolis/St Paul - traffic was miserable. Awful roads and took forever in an Uber at rush hour
St Louis - very traditional and conservative. Not really many crosswalks and didn’t seem like many people value exercise and recreation as a way of life. And in my view Missouri stands out as a *ss backwards place politically
Houston - takes hours to run basic grocery store errands. Tried to get from one neighborhood to another section of city and found my whole day is shot

Especially for running, it is the most overrated place to train.
Anyone that goes to Boulder to TRAIN is a moron.
It is inferior to every major altitude location in the US. It has the worst weather of every major altitude destination. (minus flagstaff, which gets pass because it's at REAL altitude).
The dirt roads are stupid and rekt.
The amount of sub-elite, B-string runners is a nightmare.
^ Came here to post exactly this. Boulder is extremely overrated in general, but particularly for running. All of the famous spots aren't even in Boulder...

Any city that has a real winter is going to then have full construction season, so traffic will always be awful.
I have LOVED Minneapolis when I have been there. The lakes are a great place to run, bike paths all over, the river trail is awesome, and fun neighborhoods such as northeast. Also a pretty clean city compared to most I have visited.

Napa is a great pick for being overrated. VERY highly rated. Not impressive at all in my opinion. There are countless places in CA that are amazingly beautiful in terms of the natural setting. Napa is not one of them. On top of that, the city itself is kind of dumpy, actually.
And while we're on it, wine is also overrated. It's just a drink. People there make it a damn religion. It's weird.

I don't see it that way. If anything, Boulder is underrated. It's everything you want in a city except for the high cost of homes, but that typically comes with the territory when it comes to desirable places. Homes are cheap in downtown Detroit. Free, actually.
NYC is disgusting with filthy people stacked one on top of another. What is wrong with you?

Any others?
everything on the post is spot on, but ill add a few more overrated.
. Any city in the southern half of California
. Miami
Appropriately rated cities
. Atlanta
. Boston
.Chicago (its bad and everyone knows it)
.Detroit (see Chicago)
.Houston
Underrated cities
.Dallas
.Portland (Maine)
.Bozeman (MT)
.Savannah
.Salt Lake City (If you learn to ignore the mormons)
.Boise (Boise & Bozeman top 2 at the moment; Californian's are ruining Bozeman at the moment unfortunately)
Try to get a job in Bozeman, Portland or Savannah. Try to do anything outside in Dallas. Then tell me about your rating system.
Dallas weather isn't great, but certainly tolerable; I live in dallas and heat / humidity is never an issue. I'll take sub optimal weather over heavy liberal municipal policies and egregious cost of living.
As far as job prospects in Bozeman, savanah, and portland, i would have absolutely zero difficulty. I admit that my views on this may be biased, but pretty much anyone with even somewhat marketable skill sets could easily find positions in these cities, maybe with an exception of portland. By the way Bozeman is set for a major tech expansion. If you could afford it I would buy Bozeman property. Don't take my word for it though, take a look at all the major tech companies opening Bozeman offices. It's set to be similar to a slightly less liberal version of Austin.
I live in NY and would agree that it is an ugly city with quite a bit of dirt and filth. But its disgusting areas are no more filthy than those of the other big cities.
American cities, in general, are overrated.
In no universe is Dallas underrated. You live in a soulless sh!thole.
I came from the beautiful luxurious suburbs to live in NYC four decades ago. I love it here and won't be leaving. i get the feeling, from the descriptions of it here, that some of you, like many tourists, confine your experiences to between 34th and 57th Street in Manhattan. Which is pretty much hell, and an area I never visit. There's much, much more to NYC than that.
The person who said every city is overrated could not possibly have been to Florence (Firenze), Italy.

Boulder is the best except for cost of living, but on the flip side is it’s been a solid long term investment.

Dallas is awful, who are you trying to kid?
The geographical setting of San Francisco is unremarkable???? What are you talking about?
Dallas is horrendous. Salt Lake City has a beautiful setting and I like some of the older buildings in the city center but there is a major homeless problem for such a small city and much of the city is non-descript. Savannah is a nice city, though also overrun with tourists and crime. Atlanta is better now with the belt line for running and activities, but a lot of the city is nothing to brag about. There is a huge inequality problem there and downtown is absolutely a dud. Tampa and Orlando have little to recommend them. Miami Beach is absolutely overrated, fun for a day if you avoid the strip.
Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Berkeley are fine cities. Oakland is underrated. It has a terrible reputation but there are a lot of very nice places there and great food in the downtown area.
