The High Lonesome 100 has existed for 2 years. Apparently anyone can sign up and last year, the race had 94 male competitors and 22 female competitors - so it was 81% male and 19% female. That ratio is unacceptable to the race organizers.
In 2020, the race is going to a lottery system for entrants and the lottery will insure that the field is 50% male and 50% female.
“As a middle class, white male in the US, I’m one of the most privileged people on the globe. Equality and fairness are really important to me. We’re confident that if we didn’t do a gender split, we’d perpetuate a system that prevents women from participating at equal levels,” said race director Caleb Efta to Canadian Trail Running.
So what do you think of this decision? Does equality and fairness to you mean a 50-50% percent split in entrants?
