Sudden cardiac arrest is considerably rare. It is normally the first sign of heart disease in young athletes. In fact, one study found that approximately 30 percent of players had indications of underlying heart disease before an arrest.
It is not easy to stop or predict unexpected cardiac arrest, and screening programs are more challenging with no certain benefits.
According to the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ), doctors should routinely ask players whether they feel lofty, exhausted or sense chest pains during or after practices. Physicians should also ask about their family history to determine whether there may be an acquired such condition.
