I prefer the lights to the human pacemakers. Less physical assistance, more accurate pacing for a specified time goal, no post-race whining about how it was the pacemakers' fault that a real competitor didn't run fast enough, and no embarrassing explanations to outsiders that the runners in the lead for most of the race are not actually serious competitors, and have no intention of winning or even finishing the race, but are rather more like the Washington Generals in Harlem Globetrotters games -- they get paid to make the real stars look better.
Another pacemaking option would be the squeaking rabbit carcass on the mechanical stick appoach of greyhound racing, which ha the advantage of minimizing drafting assistance while emphasizing the mindless and degrading nature of the practice.
