They were half squats. Primarily used for sprinters to increase explosion through quadricep and glute firing. Notice how he controls down through the negative and explodes up, even to the ball of the foot to contract the gastrocs.

Relatively impressive for a man of that size.

Am I crazy or does that picture show the complete opposite of what you just said? Quarter squats would be best for vertical jump height and the worst for top speed in running, whereas full squats resulted in the least amount of DECREASE in running speed.
