People here tend to lose their shitt if you mention the fact that El G, Komen, Ngeny, Lagat, Bekele, etc were all on the exact same drugs at the exact same time.

I think the main thing with a lot of Lamce haters is that they dont like his personality. His cheating went beyond exclusively cheating and he was an a-hole and a bully to many people and he hurt many innocent people while being a selfish prick. If he was a nice guy who cheated, then people's opinion of him would not be so critical.

There probably wasn't a single cyclist on those Tours that wasn't doing the same drugs, probably from the same supplies, probably paid for by the same agents, and they all allowed Lance to go down vilified because he was the greatest of his generation.

Just like how there probably wasn't a single runner in a distance event in the Sydney Olympic finals who was clean.

If you can disprove the motor in the bike, then I'm inclined to believe he is the best cyclist ever because I also believe they were all doping. That is their game. I believe they still are.

Several facts:

Lance is a doucebag

Lance won with drugs

Lance also won because he was diabolically afraid of losing ....A major contributing factor to each of the preceding facts

Lance could have won without drugs, but that will never be played out and never did play out

Douchebag could race a bike down the hill, across the hill, up the hill through a million fans giving a foot of space on the L'Alp Duez, redline it through the rain when others paused, and raced better, with superior tactics, and more daring than most all, ever.

When Fraud-man says he could've won without drugs, he knows that he is/was better at racing and he's correct.

....Some other 5 time winners can be included among the most doped of their generation also.

One of these IS considered the greatest cyclists ever and DID get caught doping.

Each of the other 5 time winners is revered as cycling gods, despite dubious PED allegations.

BUT, none of these guys propped themselves up like douche-fraud did.

....They didn't survive cancer, play that narrative through adoring fans who never were cycling fans, while winning tdf 7x, attain rockstar status, make cycling the biggest thing it's ever been, gain access to practically anything, body, place, concert, Crown, Pope,President, all while propping up public denials, writing books lying & denying, do Nike ads shaming those who dare question his authenticity. then retire clean as a whistle, get antsy with ego, return to the maelstrom of cycling only to expose his once entitled but no longer entitled self to Tailwind, Landis, Postal, Tygart, USADA and Oprah.

His legacy???

Destroyed participation in cycling and road bike sales.

Destroyed the popularity of pro cycling in the US.

(Tour of Cali has become a sideshow, Utah is in trouble, Procycling Challenge RIP. All Euro again, domestic scene sucks.)

....Both of these he contributed to the drastic increase in popularity in the US only to see massive cynicism about everything Lance kill it all via massive pendulum swing to obscurity.

No one will ever take a future Cindarella story like his without cynicism because of him.

Look. Maybe the very first column I ever wrote for LetsRun.com back in 2000 showed how the WRs in all events went way down after the invention of EPO. That being said, I have a good friend agent Tom Ratcliffe who would bet his life that Komen was clean. Perhaps the fact that the sport went openly professional and we added a whole continent of pros from Africa had something to do with it.

But here is that column.

All of that being said, that has nothing to do with Armstrong. The reason why he is vilified is simple. 1) People care way more about doping in sorts where records are a big part of things than they do your average team sport B) Lance was more than a cyclist - he was a cancer inspiration and used cancer as an excuse as to why he'd never dope so his fraud is particularly jarring C) Not only did he lie under oath about it repeatedly, he also sued several people and tried to ruin their lives for telling the truth.

My view on this is AROD is the one who deserves to be vilified. Yet he's on ESPN announcing baseball games.
