Ooops, Bun-Boy just blundered BIG-TIME to lose.
Just like we predicted.
He claims he moved the knight to wrong square??
How can that happen at the highest chess level. O, that's right, the Power of the Man-Bun.

Another total Bun-induced self-destruction from a dead rook endgame draw.
He ends with 3 wins (more than anyone) and 3 losses (more than anyone).
Bun Man just crashed out of the World Cup!. DEVASTETING.
Cut the hair, lose 20 kilos of weight, win Grand prix in Nov?
Bun-Man says Chess is beyond any good or evil, but clearly the Bun falls into one of those categories.
Bun-Man blew 2 Chess960 games today in Oslo!!
It's still the thing...

Bun-Man goes home DEVASTATED from Hamburg in first round KO (2 games)!!
Well, at least he got 3rd place on the "Board of Shame" in random Oslo chess before this.

No playing venue is bad enough to excuse 23. . . . e4 in that first game against Duda. This is a serious blow to the chances of the man-bun to make an appearance at the candidates tournament next year, for which we can all be thankful.
BUN BOY WINS!
Just needs to hold off MVL tomorrow, then win the finals match, and he's in.
I say that he has been dethroned. But in his defense, perhaps he thought it was a game of thrones.

With the Candidates Tournament in Russia, I've figured that he'll probably get in as the wild card if he doesn't get the second Grand Prix spot, but he's obviously now the favorite to qualify as of right. Perhaps MVL will be the wild card -- is anyone else more deserving? -- but I don't know if he has any constituency among those who will make the call. I would guess that, among the Russian fans, the young Alekseenko could be a popular (albeit rather questionable) choice.
One Draw away From Bun in Candidates!!

They (Russian organizers) had previously announced there would be a play-off amongst all wildcard-eligible Russians. With Nepo earning his own spot (it seems), only Alekseenko is left on this eligibility list. (Karjakin isn't rated highly enough)

Yes, I believe that the head of the Russian federation said that, but I think that was before Grischuk and Nepo claimed their spots in the tournament. I hope that MVL will receive appropriate consideration for the wildcard. Alekseenko has had some nice stretches recently, and he could very well develop into a top contender at some point, but he hasn't proven himself yet, and his selection would likely further the image of international chess as a cesspool of corruption and cronyism. And to what end? MVL has a lot of fans, and plays some of the most exciting chess at the top level at all time controls; even his failures are interesting to watch. Although "death by draws" has been predicted for at least a hundred years, classical chess really does seem in mortal danger at the world-class level; MVL is one of the few top players who liven things up these days.
Literally right after Nepomniachtchi drew his game, this was already up on TASS.ru
A special invitation (“wild card”) to the candidates' tournament is a tremendous success and challenge for the young Russian chess player Kirill Alekseenko. This opinion was shared with TASS by the vice-president of the Chess Federation of Moscow Sergey Smagin.
Andrey Guryev, Vice-President of the Russian Chess Federation and the head of PhosAgro expressed his satisfaction with the results: "The last stage of the FIDE Chess Grand Prix ended triumphantly for Russian chess players. Ian Nepomniachtchi showed a great game and will join Alexander Grischuk in the Candidates Tournament! PhosAgro will keep its promise and sign a personal sponsorship contract with both Grandmasters. Now the chances of bringing the chess crown back to Russia are much higher!"
MVL's team "appeals" the selection of Alekseenko. Unfortunately, it just sounds pathetic at this point.

I agree this is on the lame side (the "appeal" is to the RCF to change their minds, when actually it's the Yekaterinburg organizers who are "sovereign" in the end IIUC).
A Russian site had the best take: Want to improve chess justice? Ensure clean money in Chess. (maybe not the sharpest translation)
IMO though, the new "rules" for the wildcard at least saved us from Putin's friend Karjakin again.
Saw the title and thought it was Magnus Carlson at first. Was about ready to cry
