How old are you?
How many years have you been running?
What is your background in running...such as mpw as an 8th grader, 9th grader, etc.
In general it's best to do a variety of stuff and never overload on anything new.
Make adaptations slow.
You seem close and could prolly get there off talent and sharpening what fitness you have.
But lack of solid times at longer distances suggest you’re still developing and building. So more mileage and over distance.
keep the cake oven a little longer before pulling it out and icing it...
16 as of tomorrow. I’ve been running since I was in 7th grade but I didn’t start practicing daily until 9th grade.
MPW- 9th grade- Probably less than 30 miles a week.
MPW- 10th grade- Less than 35 miles a week.
I never really ran lots of mileage until this summer as I never took things seriously until this summer.
I’m no where near it right now I probably am like a 19:25 5k runner right now as I have been building my base with lots of easy mileage. I’m scared as I’m not used to being this slow so I have no idea if it’s normal. Like will I get way faster after base phase and start sharpening?
This track season I probably ran no more than 30 I couldn’t PR.
I’m in the summer of my Junior Year.

Just keep running and the improvements will come. There’s no secret to achieving an arbitrary time, other than being consistent and staying injury-free. I would say to be careful doing workouts during the summer, but don’t neglect tempo runs and hills. I’m 10 years older than you and got back to running middle distance this spring, setting PRs from 800-5k on low mileage (~30-35 mpw), but I was occasionally hitting 50 mpw before I got a coach.
Good luck, and have fun!
Thanks! So you don’t recommend doing much speed workouts until season starts? It’s just that I’m so used to running fast every run before and now that I take it easy I feel like I can barely run a sub 6 minute mile but I don’t know if that’s normal during base phase as it’s my first time doing this.
I would do some strides 2-3 times a week, just to keep some speed and get the legs turning over. If you're running mileage you haven't run before your legs are going to be tired so no you're not going to feel quick -- the point is just to get the mileage in so you can do workouts later.
Yeah I do strides on M W F. Sometimes I incorporate them into my run... thanks it makes much more sense now I was confused on how the easier mileage would help me get faster. What mileage do you think I should peak at?
