Also Solinsky and Mottram both didn't lift heavy weights. Mottram said he got too sore from it and it interfered with his running, and all Solinsky did in HS was 500 situps and 75 pushups 2x a week. That gave him enough core strength to run 100 mile weeks at very fast pace.[/quote]
Doubtful Pre, doubtful.
Herb Lindsay was probably well built. But of course you are going to look bigger when you are close to the camera!

Solinsky fell down the stairs in a freak accident resulting in that hamstring tear. It wasn't the mileage.
Over training can lead to burn out, illnesses, and injuries. It's possible that the hamstring tear could have
been partly caused by running too much.

I lift 4-5 times a week and have done so for years. I also run 20-25 mpw. If you lift heavy weight, you might be able to emulate a Prefontaine, Goucher, or Solinsky build, but you’ll look small to anyone who lifts. Keeping weight on past 30 mpw is a big challenge.
He ran 100 mpw all the time, but got injured when he tried 120 mpw (his hamstring got completely torn off, career-ending injury). He was known for running fast on each day tho, his easy pace was sub 6 miles and even Tegenkamp and his other training partners had to avoid him on their easy days. Chris could just take so much fast pounding, nothing would ever break him down he was injury-free most of his career until 120 mpw weeks finally did him in after a decade of this insanity.
This is false. 120mpw is not going to tear your hamstring off. What well, tripping over your fucking dog coming down the stairs. Because that's exactly what happened. Seriously, it's absolutely fucking tragic.

I am 25 pounds heavier at the same height and just barely start looking a bit large for running.
Seconded about Deek. I also saw him in New York at that time, and was surprised how slight he looked in person compared to what he looked like in photos and on television. Yes Deek looked big next to other elite distance runners, but compared to "the normals" he looked thin.
Same goes for Herb Lindsay. I trained with him for a bit in Boulder in the early 80s, and while he was indeed ripped and sinewy, he had nowhere near the mass I was expecting based on how he appeared in certain photos.

"Prefontaine build" lololololol

It's a fact that Solinsky was one of the tallest and heaviest elite distance runners of all-time. He was 6'1" and 165 lbs (185cm 75kg). He was the one guy looking like a monster on a track race, that could solo beat up 10 of his competitors in a real fight.
You clearly didn't see Imane Merga throw him to the infield like a rag doll in Monaco.

What's Roger Daltrey got to do with distance running?
Um Brahim Lahlafi FTW

Mr 12:49, built like a rugby front rower.

Something looks odd on her? ?
From the posts I think a lot of you understand hamstring issues. I know nothing about Solinsky at all but spent many years with hamstring issues. A neighbor dog ran out and made me jump... hamstring tear. Catch my toe on a stick in a minor fashion on a trail...miss two months. Push into a headwind on my 5th 1000 rep and get what I thought was a cramp....wake the next morning unable to walk. This went on and on. If Solinsky had ongoing hamstring issues it was unlikely tripping on the dog 'caused' the issue but revealed the latest setback. Any minor abnormality can cause issues for those with chronic issues, someone as talented as Solinsky included.

I'll concede on the upper body - I only saw him in person at the end of his career (well, he was more running for fun), and his upper body certainly wasn't what I'd call 'scrawny'..but perhaps I am not remembering correctly, or he had put on a considerable amount of weight that more naturally matched his true, healthy phenotype) .
Still, the legs, the tree trunk legs...
Lopez Lomong is also pretty jacked.
Solinsky definitely did lift upper body, just look-up BTC’s strength routine.
Brendan Quinn, who ran XC for Providence in the 1980s and the Steeplechase for Ireland in the 1988 Olympics, was reportedly around 180lbs -- and when he was in an XC race, he looked even bigger.
Peter snell
Looked jacked
Everyone totally glossed over the picture of Paul McMullen. There were quite a few threads in the early 2000's about how fast he was, despite his bodybuilder appearance. He's probably a good template if you are looking to "get jacked" and still run fast.
Alan Webb also a good example, he was not a big dude, but completely ripped.
Craig Mottram also a good example, although his appearance probably more a product of his size/build.
Josh Cox also a good example, although I think the dude was also a model, so maintained his physical appearance for his profession.
