Max is tough for sure downhill but honestly Gray would have crushed him considering there is a big climb and also Gray has beat him in the last few times they've met at up and down mountain races. I recall Gray saying he tried to enter but they wouldn't let him or something in a podcast interview? Why would they leave him out and let less talented guys race? How did Max and Hayden get in so easily? Would love some background on entry for this event!
I've not done the race, but I know there are several ways to get in for the first time: through the lottery; win one of the Alaska Mountain Runners' grand prix races (would be very tough to do against the fast local skiers like Norris and his teammates); or through the auction: 10 spots per race (men/women). 3 spots were auctioned in April, and 7 spots were auctioned the night before the race. I think they mentioned in the broadcast that the average cost for a spot in the auctions was $1200 women and $1900 men. Maybe Hawks got in due to Altra sponsoring the race, or maybe it was the auction or an invite? I'm guessing they invited Kilian and Emelie back in 2015 - maybe Max and Ricky Gates too?
Past winners and 10-time finishers get into the race whenever they want. Top 225 + top 10 age groupers get into the following year's race.
