Max King is back baby!!!
If Joe Gray was there it would have been a wrap. Gray has cleaned him up the last few years. Why aren't there other top Americans running this?

Did you watch the race? Joe Gray might beat Max up the hill but how good a downhill would he run there? This is a little different even than mountain races that have inclines of 12 to 15%.
Why don't other americans run this? First prize = $0
As for your post, why is it so hard for you idiots to just congratulate somebody on a good race instead of trying to come up with somebody else who you think could beat him?
I like that both Allie Ostrander and Max King are well-associated with this race. Two multi-talented runners who run to the beat of their own drum.
WOW Max's downhill is absolutely insane. I don't know how these guys train for this, but it is amazing to watch.
This is how running should be.
Watching the IG video of his descent was mind blowing. How in the world do folks do this and not break every bone in their body?!? Absolutely insane.
Congrats, Max! National class steepler, marathoner, mountain runner, etc. Amazing range.

A lot of mountain runners train for downhills and on the course specifically. Max split 11:32 for the downhill, which was 10th fastest. But the fastest downhill of the day was 10:01, by the 18th place dude. Would like to have seen that! Yes, you get some local cred for downhill speed in this race.

Part of the charm of Mt Marathon is that it is made of shale, which makes it tough to get up, and quick to get down. Even falling on shale is not super dangerous at that angle, it is akin to thick snow or grass, with occasional sharp bits to keep you honest.

Joe Gray has finished 4th, 5th, and 7th in the up and downhill years (odd years, which alternate with uphill only even years) of the World Mountain Running Championships. He'd do well on the downhills. Both him and Max have been WMR World Champs. If he were interested in racing Mount Marathon, I'm sure Hoka would make it worthwhile for him, so the prize money isn't that big a consideration.
David Norris, the course record holder(2016) and winner over Max last year, sat out this year's race out due to concerns about the smoke, but Max beat those that raced, which is the best you can do. It was in impressive performance on a hot day.
A lot of stabilisation (legs, glutes, hips, etc.) on the downhill ... but that wicked heart strength on the ascent is impressive.
Is Max King related to Jamin King?
Legend.
The ultimate race would be Kilian, Norris, Max and Joe...next year? Maybe throw up some money?
I think Sage Canaday could win this race quite comfortably.
Hayden Hawks almost chicked
Jamin's fast uncle?
Max is tough for sure downhill but honestly Gray would have crushed him considering there is a big climb and also Gray has beat him in the last few times they've met at up and down mountain races. I recall Gray saying he tried to enter but they wouldn't let him or something in a podcast interview? Why would they leave him out and let less talented guys race? How did Max and Hayden get in so easily? Would love some background on entry for this event!
Hardloper probably thinks this is easy for a real runner to win because Max King is walking and the race is under 9 miles.
